Your best bet is to find a used remote for the exact model at a local thrift store.
You can also get a universal remote and control the tv.
You can get a replacement remote online at
http://www.remotes.com/remotes/servlet/rs?a=Search&o=c&uid=0&m=NEC+px-42vm5a&uuid=12478606437130
for about $50.
Since you are a not for profit, I would ask a local TV repair ship if they can help you out with a loaner remote. They may even volunteer some trouble shooting help. They are ususually willing to help.

Any idea if I can hook my laptop up to my EDTV?

Yes, if your laptop has a VGA out port (that is the external display port - usually blue with 15 pins).
The NEC display has a VGA input on the right-hand side.
You just need a VGA cable that you plug in both connectors.
Then, read your laptop manual to determine how to activate the external display (usually the FN key with an other key that has a display icon on it).
On the NEC display, make sure it is using the RGB1 input (use the remote to activate this input).
That should do it.

NOTE: Make sure your laptop is using a reasonable screen resolution (that is 640x480 or 800x600).

Nec 42'' plasma

Try holding down the 'INPUT SELECT' button, then press the power button on, on the tv at the same time.

Not switching on

My NEC PlasmaSync did the same thing.  It's caused by not using a power filter on your AC input.  To reset your TV, turn off the power button on the bottom until no lights are flashing.  Then hold down the "Input Select" button while holding down the "power" button.  The tv should then reset.
