sounds like you need to replace the adaptive defrost assembly. and yes, it will effect the performance of the fridge. the part number is 12002104 if the first 2 numbers of your serial # is 22; or 61003990 if the 1st 2 numbers of your serial # is 10; or 61005988 if the 1st 2 numbers of your serial # is 17. here is a breakdown showing the location it is # 13 in the picture. hope this helps.250

SOURCE: How to test maytag refrigerator defrost thermostat

on your model the thermostat comes with a new heater
http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Defrost-Heater-Assembly/61006116/1021756
you have to read the t-stat when it's cold, unplug the harness, stick one end into the harness and stick the tip of the other probe into the other wire of the t-stat,or seeing that you have to replace the heater and t-stat anyway cut the two wires going to the t-stat,wire nut them together, manually turn the timer knob to put it into defrost and if the heater comes on you know the t-stat is bad.you can leave the heater on and get a hair dryer, melt out all the ice and then disconnect the t-stat wires and tape them or wirenut them, this way your machine will run for 10 to 12 days before it freezes up again giving you time to order your parts and you won't loose any food.when you get new parts melt out any ice again and change heater and t-stat.most likely the t-stat is bad, common problem.

Ice building up in bottom of freezer, of side by side maytag

Hello there,
When you are experiencing ice build up in your refrigerator, it simply is due to a faulty defrost unit. The defrost unit is composed o9f the defrost timer, defrost thermostat and the defrost heater. Once the freezer is building up ice, the defrost unit turns on the heater, then the defrost thermostat turns off the compressor while the defrost timer, settings the routine timing for the activity.
Once a component out of the three develops a fault, the routine is stopped and then ice begins to build up in the back of the freezer or at the bottom depending on the type of refrigerator it is.
The solution to the problem is for you to have the defrost timer, defrost heater and defrost thermostat tested, that way you will be able to tell the faulty component and replace it with a new one.
To carry out the testing and replacing of these components, please read this tips, it will guide you on testing the components and replacing them.

I bought a maytag side by side in 2002; model # MSD2454GRQ, SN 18157432AL, REV # 18. Ice is forming at the bottom of the maytag freezer department. Overnight ice will form at about 1/8 inch and left has...

Defrost problem: 3 components. Defrost Heater. Timer (circuit board or motorized) & Thermostat.
Remove cover on the inside back wall (usually 6 screws). Note frost pattern. (bottom of evaporator coil)
Put refrigerator into defrost cycle and note the defrost heater come on, or not. (careful heater can glow red hot)... Unplug Frige and test defrost components. Replace bad component... Refrigerator should defrost every 8 hours. when the cycle slows or quits the freezer will freeze over the evaporator coil and no air flow = no cold air...

I have a maytag s/s refride/freeze MZD2766ge Evap coil ices up no cooling to fridgIm preety sur its theheater/thermo. But imconcerned it could be a defrost board involved but im not sure

Good day,
the board in this machine is notorious for failing. Testing by jumping L1 to test terminal may tell you, but other components in the board may give you a false response.

The main heater rarely fails and you can test it with an ohm meter to verify that.

If the main heater checks good for continuity, replace the defrost thermostat, and board. Best long term repair.

Side by wide maytag icing up in freezer.

the freezer has a heating element to keep it "frost free". if its freezing up, then either your heating element is defective or the thermostat is bad, or sometimes both. suggest that you get a appliance repair book if your not familiar with working on appliances. the job is not that difficult if you know what to look for and how to test it. good luck.

Maytag, side by side refrigerator stopped working

Check the thermostat which is located in the top left hand coner of the refrigerator. Also check the relay on the compressor to make sure it is not staying open all the time. Also there has been a huge recall on Maytag side by side refridgerators made between 2001 and 2005. I would also try calling Maytag and get the problem fixed by them by recall

Maytag Wide by Side (5 years old) Freezing Refrigerator & Freezer

There is 2 things you can replaced to rectify this problem .
1 is the defrost timer and the next is the thermostat.
On the thermostat is a metal rod that is connected to a vent so when you adjust it it open or closes the vent .Just make sure that is not loose because if it's loose even though you turn thermostat down the vent would be wide open allowing freezing air to get into refrigerator.

Maytag refrigerator too cold sometimes and then extremely warm

Freezers and refrigerators use little thermostat bulbs inside the compartments in the back make sure nothing is blocking or has hit these and damaged them. this is what regulates the temp inside. Or worst case, the thermostat has gone by the wayside. But make your vents are not plugged so airflow is restricted in the back and make sure your coils underneath and backside are clean of dirt. If this is a self defrost unit make sure it is doing just that, check the drip pan underneath for water. Check the simple things first, otherwise sounds like the thermostat might be bad. sorry!
