Hm, if it is occurring only when reverse stitching, that may be a machine problem needing professional service.

Usually, bird nesting results when the upper thread is not firmly seated in the tension disk. Be sure to Always Raise the Presser Foot when threading the upper thread. Try to make sure the needle is in the highest position before beginning to stitch.

Could possibly also be the needle. Try a brand new needle or a different kind of needle, ie quilting or embroidery needle rather than a universal needle. May be an incompatibility of needle & thread.

Check that the tension is correct--both the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

My innoovis 2800D. Is bird nesting. I've rethreaded and cleaned out the bobbin case. Still bird nesting. Any suggestions

there is a lot of this bird nesting going on and it isn't even spring.
I have never solved it on my machine, but I can make it better by adjusting the feed tension tighter.

Top stitch is fine bottom is loose. Have tried adjusting tension but not working. If I get tension too tight breaks thread so I gradually change tension to no avail. Please help

Check your stitch sample. The loose stitches under the fabric--are they actually top thread???? Usually, stitch problems under the fabric is a result of a top thread problem. In this case, it could be bird nesting.

Remove the top thread from the machine.
Install a brand new needle.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot.
Rethread from the beginning.

Tension setting model lx2763how to set the tension top stitch looks good bottom stitch is loose

top tension is incorrect
pull the top thread out and there should be resistance to pulling it before you thread the needle

I cannot get the tension correct - big loops on the back with Gutterman all-purpose thread. Have cleaned tension discs and adjusted bobbin tension screw. Checked for correct bobbin and needle thread.

bird nesting ( big loops under material) is from the needle thread tension being too loose
thread the machine as if threading the needle but before threading the needle pull on the thread , there should be resistance to thread feed
if not the tensioner plates are not adjusting properly

Tension on sewing machine

Check your stitch sample. The looping under the fabric is most likely the top thread. If so, this is call bird nesting or thread nesting. Most common cause is the top thread is not completely seated in the tension disk.

Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread.
Set the top tension at the midway point (this can be tweaked later).

Test your stitch. Increase or decrease the top tension until the top & bobbin threads meet in the middle of your fabric.

I have a 9020 singer sewing machine I bought without a manual. I can't seem to sew without looping the thread under it. Almost in knots.

Are you saying the upper thread is knotting under the fabric as it stitches? This is bird nesting or thread nesting and is generally caused by mis-threading, the thread not being seated in the tension disk, or the upper tension too loose.

When threading the upper thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot. Verify that the machine is threaded correctly. If one guide is missed, the stitching will go haywire. Start out with the upper tension set around the midway point and then tweak it through test stitching.

When sewing with straight stitch, I get loops underneath. I've changed bobbin, rethreaded, cleaned lint, etc. still making loops on under side.

You may need to adjust the tension knob for the thread . Usually located above the needle . screw it in a little at a time or perhaps it has a number scale if so increase to a higher number a little at a time till the stitches become correct.

Phaff 1472 stitches are bunching up underneath

That is thread nesting or bird nesting. Could be the result of several things, but main reasons are upper tension too loose and the thread not being completely seated in the tension disk.

What am I doing wrong when the stitching on top of the material is ok and straight and the backside is knotting?

wrong bobbin tension , but amazingly its actually easier to adjust the top threads tension to compensate for it , use your tension knob to slowly adjust , try an inch , slowly adjust try an inch , and so on to get a top and bottom thread tension to match , this will need to be adjusted for each major change in fabric (aka , knits to woven )
