For normal conditions, the medium sized dot should be set to the arrow.
For fine dust, turn counter-clockwise. For larger particles turn clockwise.
As a further tip, if there's a lot of fine dust in your area, vacuum up a short strip of toilet paper. This will provide more surface area for the dust to cling to without clogging the bag walls well before it's full.
SOURCE: Repair manual for Electrolux EPIC 6500 SR
I don't have a manual for these but the trickiest thing about these units is taking them apart. If you have an Aerus/Electrolux dealer near you, it's not a bad investment to have them install the motor for you. You would probably receive a warranty with the work, and the things a long time. Great return on investment. But if you are determined to do it yourself, open the front of the canister and remove the bag. As you are looking at the front of the unit, there are two vinyl coverd strips that run the length of the unit. Pull forward on these strips and then pull out so that the vinyl seperates from the plastic underneath. Now grab the plastic strip with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull towards the front of the canister. These can be tough if the machine has never been opened up before, but pull as hard as you need to, to slide the strip out. Once both strips are out, turn the machine over, pull out on the sides of the bottom of the unit, and lift up. The bottom should come of relatively easily, and eveything will be exposed. Good Luck!!

Turn the knob on the top of the vacuum all the way to the right.I had the same problem and that fixed it.
SOURCE: How do I attache the hose on an Electrolux Epic
If you are having trouble hooking the hose to the machine, your latch is mostlikely broken. This can be replaced. You can either buy the latch at your Aerus/Electrolux shop and replace it yourself if you are mechanical or have the service manager do it for you. There shouldn't be very much of a charge for this simple process.
If you are talking about hooking the hose to the wands, there is a latch that will need to be replaced. If so, the best thing to do is have the service manager replace the latch because there are wires in the hose handle that are sometimes hard to deal with.

From the manual: "Adjust the control dial for type of cleaning required. For normal cleaning conditions the dial should be set in center position (T). When vacuuming fine dust, rotate the dial counterclockwise. When vacuuming larger particles, rotate the dial clockwise."
Yes, there is a secondary carbon filter under the accessories tray.
