Canon faxphone L80; ldc display shows CHECK PRINTER. Followed instructions in manual to change cartridge and then unplug for 5 min. No Response, still shows CHECK PRINTER.

i think that somone was oppened the cover by force, that can damadge the cover switch.
open the front cover, look inside is there any foreign body, is the cover switch looks fine,
look at this picture from the user guide page 152:
The printer cover is the cover that you open to remove the cartridge. Open it and check that the cartridge is inserted correctly. Remove and reinsert cartridge then close the cover. Check all around the m/c to make sure all doors are closed.
The L80 printer guts are very similar to the HP 5L and HP 6L printer (Not well known, but the printing engines on many HP printers are made by Canon). In fact it is almost possible to use a 5L/6L toner cartridge in the L80, but as I recall there was a plastic nub that prevented it from fitting properly. This is probably meant to force the user to buy more expensive Canon toner carts instead of using cheaper generics for the 5L/6L. Try HP PartSurfer and you may be able to locate the part that you need.
