Be sure that your Modem plugs into the WAN port on the router.
1. Unplug your cable/dsl modem power
2. Unplug your Router power
3. Plug in your modem power ... wait for it to come completely up.
4. Plug in your WRT54G Router and wait for it to come up.
Press the reset
button on the back of the router for 45 seconds while it is powered on. This will do a factory reset. Wait for it to come up. Then unplug it. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Let it come all the way up.
Plug a PC into one of the switch ports on the router.
Now do an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /refresh in the command prompt of your PC to get an IP address from your Router.
Now you should be able to ping 192.168.0.1 and you should be able to get into the the configuration utility by putting http://192.168.0.1 in a browser. The username should be blank and the password will most likely be admin (all lower case).
Be sure to lock down your wireless SSID
so neighbors and people passing by are unable to connect to your access
point and do bad things on your network.

have you tried unplugging the linksys for a sec then plug it back in?
also have you checked the pin connection on the plug on both the computer and the router?
what are the lights indicating?

Setup your IP addresses correctly by checking available IP addies in router.
You will have to know your router addie and your available wireless addies (in router). For this you need to enter router configuration (read manual).
Open network properties, tcp/ip properties, check "use following ip addie and enter something like 192.168.1.5 depending on what your router is setup as available.
Enter same subnet as your router.
Enter DNS server addies from you ISP.
