Please disconnect the speakers and try to swicth ON,If it switches ON without going to standby then one of your speakers is faulty.
After disconnecting the speakers and the set stil goes to standby it means one onre of the protection circuits in your system has been activated, check your fan if its rotating, the output ics if are not burnt or shorted. Also check your power supply section.thanks.

All of a sudden stopped working and won't turn back on. been 12hrs. when power is pressed, it turns on for 2 seconds and then standby lights blink again and it turns off

This could be caused by a direct short circuit on the speaker outputs. Try disconnecting all the speaker connections at the back of the receiver and then power back on. You can also try a factory reset by holding the surround mode + clear button for 3 seconds.

In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.

PROTECTIVE FEATURE

In some cases, the STANDBY indicator may blink slowly, twice per second. In this case, turn off the unit, unplug the power cord, and check the following points.

Make sure the speaker cables are not reversed and connected to the wrong sides (+ and -) on the unit.

Make sure the speaker cables connected to the unit are not shorted. (Check both the unit end and the speaker end.)

Make sure the volume does not exceed the level that the unit is capable of producing.

When using the unit in a rack or other enclosed space, heat may build up inside the unit and cause a fire. When installing the unit, be sure to leave suffi cient space between the top, back and both sides of the unit and walls or other AV components to prevent the internal temperature from rising.

After checking these points, plug in the power cord and use the remote controller to turn on the unit. Turn down the volume before resuming playback. Confirm that there are no problems with the speaker connections and playback performance.

If this symptom recurs, request service at your nearest service center.

In rare instances, the unit may enter standby mode and the STANDBY indicator may blink rapidly, 8 times per second. In this case, unplug the power cord and request service at your nearest service center.

turns on for a few seconds then immediately goes into standby, attempted to reset by holding in on speaker a and b as instructed with no luck, any other suggestions?
A very obvious evidence shows there is a DC coming out of the speaker terminals.

https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/denon/avr-681.shtml?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C1610027943

first download service manual.
check any DC voltages developed at the speaker
output terminals. Differential amps got damaged ,shorted, are common. Check for any shorted transistors of pre-amp stage which amplifies voltage.

Onkyo TX-SR500 5.1 Receiver Last night

1-disconnect subwoofer first and test-and then disconnect surround speakers-and front speaker after-and later center speaker.ever time you disconnect you check the operation until you find the bad one(or two)which make the problem change its cable first and then change speaker itself.if all above failed contact the service center.

Yamaha RX-V595A tuns off automatically

This was happening to mine also, all of a sudden. This solution came from the owners manual. Sure enough, the impedance selector was stuck in the middle , between 4 and 8 ohms....I also, made sure the speaker wires were not touching each other at the splice. Problem fixed.

The unit fails to turn on when
STANDBY/ON is pressed, or set in
the standby mode suddenly soon
after the power has been turned on.
The power cord is not plugged in or the
plug is not completely inserted.
The IMPEDANCE SELECTOR switch
on the rear panel is not fully set to the
upper or lower end.
Firmly plug in the power cord.
Set the switch fully to the upper or
lower end when the unit is in the
standby mode.

Standby Problem

No, I think you have a bias problem in the audio output circuit of this receiver. There is really not a lot a user can do to fix this unless you have the electronic know how and know how to trouble shoot solid state electronics. Good Luck
