Hi,

Yes, you need to have a console connection (you need DB9 to RJ45 console cable), set COM port to 9600/8/n/1 (standard settings).

If you know "root password" (or can guess one) - good. Otherwise you should go through "password recovery":

  • Power cycle switch
  • Press ESC when you see a message to "press escape"
  • Select option 2 (Recover password) and go through all steps.

Then login as root and either reconfigure switch as you need (change IP addresses, zoning, access-lists, etc.), or try to remove all databases by the "configremoveall" command.

Good luck,

I am assuming you will still need console connection to do a password recovery.. however, here is the link to one password recovery doc that may help.

DNS/DHCP support IPv6 232/485 network TTL to TCP/IP serial server module. What is baud rate? What is its baud rate?

Serial Port Signal Names Header Comments Serial1 /TxD1, /RxD1, XCV1+, XCV1- HCS12 Comm Header Standard baud rates up to 115.2 Kbaud. Jumper selectable RS232 or RS485. Jumper selectable RS232 or RS485. Jumper selectable termination options. The RS485 signals are not available on the Docking Panel. SPI1, SPI2 MOSI1, MISO1, SCK1, /SS1, MOSI2, MISO2, SCK1, /SS2 SPI Header Used for inter-processor (IP) communications on multi-processor systems such as the PDQScreen. Can be used to communicate with other peripheral devices if multi-processing is not required.
RS232 and RS485 communications The PDQ Single Board Computer (SBC) has two asynchronous serial communications ports named Serial1 and Serial2. Each serial port can be configured for the RS232 or RS485 protocol, and runs at standard baud rates up to 115,200 bits per second. The default baud rate after a factory cleanup is 115200 baud. The Serial ports are implemented by the dual on-chip hardware UARTs (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitters) on the Freescale 9S12(HCS12) microcontroller.

Each UART (sometimes referred to as a "USART") controls the serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversion and performs all of the timing functions necessary for one asynchronous serial communications link. They translate the bit-by-bit data on the serial cable into bytes of data that can be interpreted by the operating system or by your application program. The communications is asynchronous because no synchronizing clock signal is transmitted along with the data. Rather, the UART deduces the correct time to sample the incoming signal based on the start and stop bits in the signal itself.

The Serial1 and Serial2 ports have identical communications capabilities, although more of the Serial1 signals (both RS232 and RS485) are made available on the Docking Panels headers and connectors. After a factory cleanup, Serial1 is the default serial port for program development and downloading. In a finished instrument, either or both channels can be used to communicate with other serial devices, or with other computers and/or terminals using RS232 or RS485. Having a second serial port is also handy for system debugging. Since both channels can operate simultaneously and independently, serial debugging can be performed while the application program is

Options for Adding Serial Ports
The serial port is prevalent on PC's as well as scores of industrial, scientific and consumer devices, making it a convenient starting point for communications. Since RS-232 itself is only suited to short connections (50 ft. max.) many applications require that it be adapted to fit requirements. RS-422, typically used for extending RS-232 communications, provides full duplex communications between two devices. It can also provide one way communications from one master to several slaves. RS-485 communications standard allows cable lengths up to 4000 feet. It also provides very high noise immunity. Multidrop connections up to 32 different nodes can be made over a single twisted pair cable along with a signal ground connection.
This article summarizes the choices a system designer has when adding a serial (RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485) communications device. There are many different ways to add additional serial ports to your Desktop PC, Palm, or Laptop PC. USB, PCMCIA, PCI and ISA are some of the methods that will be discussed.
The Universal Serial Bus (USB) provides a high data rate and Hot Swap connection for PCs, providing an easy connection to a wide variety of multimedia and network USB devices. Generally considered to be for home or office use, USB is finding its way into Industrial applications.
PCMCIA Serial Ports are yet another way to add serial ports to a PC that has PCMCIA Slots available. Most Laptops today offer only one (if any at all) DB9 type serial ports. A PCMCIA Serial Card is a good way to add a serial port (or ports) to any laptop that is low on available serial ports (RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485).
PCI Cards are becoming more popular as a way to add serial ports to desktop PC's. PCI type slots are becoming the "norm" in standard PC's today, and PCI Serial Cards are an excellent way to add serial ports. The standard Desktop PC may only come with one serial port standard (if any serial ports at all). PCI Serial Cards use Software Drivers to address the ports to the PC.
ISA Cards are yet another way to add serial ports to the older desktop PC's. ISA type slots are becoming scarce in standard PC's today, but are still an excellent way to add serial ports. The ISA Cards are typically addressed using dip switches and shunts or jumpers to set IRQ's for each port. No Software Drivers are required with ISA style serial cards.
Palm OS PDA's may be connected to RS-422 or RS-485 data circuits using Palm adapters. These adapters offer total portability for collecting data and field service chores. The Palm device and the adapter will usually slip into a shirt pocket. Some models use the PDA's connecting cable, some include a cable and some are cradles that allow the PDA to nest in place and connect directly to the Palm base socket. PalmTerm Freeware allows you to transmit and receive data from the Palm serial port.

How do i configure the switch to allow web access through the serial port

If you can't find the manual on the Dell web site, there is a copy at: http://www.manualowl.com/m/Dell/PowerConnect-3548/Manual/188907

Did you use the command: ip http server ? See page 501 in the manual.

I would not recommend setting up a network switch with password-free access to the internet. You should at the very least limit access to a small subset of IP addresses (e.g. your network group's machines). The best practice is to use ssh communications or https with the web browser, otherwise anyone with a well-placed sniffer can read your clear-text traffic.

Cannot log into the SMC8024l2 switch via ethernet or console and after resetting to factory defaults still cannot ping the device at the default IP Address or the IP address it was set up on.

Looks to me like they never implemented the serial port. The used unit I just obtained has no signal on the serial console pins and no SMC documentation beyond plugging it in appears to exist. Likewise with TELNET access.

However you can reset the switch to factory defaults with the following procedure from a pop-up window off the login page. It worked for me.

----------

If you have forgotten the administration password you can return the Switch to its factory default state by doing the following:

1) Remove the power cord from the back of the Switch.
2) Remove all cables from the front-panel ports.
3) Connect port 1 to port 2, on the front panel, using a standard network cable.
4) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the Switch.
5) Wait at least 40 seconds before disconnecting port 1 from port 2.

After completing this procedure, the password will be 'smcadmin' and the network address will be returned to the default; 192.168.2.10/24.

I want to reset using RS323 port , i forgot its ip adress

Hi

You can reset the device through RS232 port then please follow the below steps.

You need a laptop with Console port and a console cable for EOC-8610 EXT, You really dont need the IP address if you want to do it via console (RS232) interface.

1. Connect the console cable one end to EOC-8610 EXT RS232 port and other end to Laptop serial port.
2. Open Hyper terminal and select com-port option and then provide the username and password for the device management.
3. Go inside the system menu and select Reset Factory default.

Remember if u set to load the factory default settings, the device will loose its config and will boot up with factory default configuration.

When testing the connection for xbox live it can't find the IP address.

Hi,

Xbox 360 Connection Tests: IP Address
This test verifies that your Xbox 360™ console has a valid IP (Internet Protocol) address.
If your console does not pass this test:

Confirm that there are no other devices on your network with the same IP address.

If you are using a router or gateway, verify that it is configured to assign IP addresses to network devices (DHCP-enabled).

If you are connected to a router, make sure that your console'sEthernet cable is not connected to the router's LAN port rather thanits WAN port.

If you are connected directly to a modem and your ISP (Internetservice provider) requires PPPoE settings, verify that your PPPoE username and password are correct. If your ISP doesn't require PPPoEsettings, remove the PPPoE user name and password settings.

If you are connecting directly to a modem and have replaced a devicethat was connected to your modem with your Xbox 360 console or anotherdevice, turn the modem off and back on before connecting the newdevice.

If you are using a static IP address from your ISP, verify the address with a your provider.

If your console is connected to an ad-hoc network (in which devicesare connected directly to each other), it will probably not pass thistest. If your IP address is assigned automatically and your ad-hocnetwork does not include a DHCP server, this does not indicate aproblem. The test is properly reporting that a DHCP server could not becontacted. Xbox Customer Support does not support the use of ad-hocnetworking to connect to Xbox Live.

If you're using an ad-hocnetwork without a DHCP server and you can't connect to Xbox Live, checka different diagnostic test for the root of your problem.

This comes from http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/connectionmethods/troubleshootliveconnection-testipaddress.htm

Hope i helped you.

How to assign ip to the printer

Using the LPT port is not the same as using the network port. The LPT port does not utulise an IP address.
Plug in a network cable to network port and the printer wil usually aquire an ip address via DHCP.
I repeat the LPT port is not a network port and cant initialise an ip address
