If you're using Widows XP, the solution may be the driver installation. On some printers, the drivers seem to install properly, but don't enable the printer.
Start by completely uninstalling the printer, and manually delete the drivers if necessary. Then put your driver disk into the CD drive, but when the installer comes up click EXIT or CANCEL.
You then need to go into Control Panel and open the Printers icon. Click on "install new printer" and follow the wizard until it gets to the where it says "install automatically" or "search for drivers". That is where you specify that you have the disk and follow the instructions to point the installer to the location of the printer driver disk. Then select the proper printer and let the system install the drivers that way. Most of the time with Brother Printers that will work.
