How do I turn on the tape monitor on my Onkyo TX-NR901 to use the equalizer I hooked up?
I have my TV connected to the optical input of my tx-nr901 and connected a EQ to the tape in/out but can't seem to figure out how to turn on the tape monitor to use the EQ. Please help, thank you.

Any analog processor can occupy the Tape Out/In loop. However, it will only affect stereo analog sources and, once engaged to monitor, it will disable any digital audio source.
An external amp COULD be slaved off the tape Out (or the anticipated EQ Out, but it won't be volume-controlled by the Onkyo. You would need an AVR with at least Front L/R pre-outs.
Just turning everything off is not a complete test for ground loops - although a real good start. You will need to disconnect each item so see if what is known as a "ground loop" is your culprit. If any components have standard 3 prong plug (with the pesky ground pin) they would be most likely. But, do them one by one. If its totally cleaned of anything but 2 speakers on the outputs, then the repair shop is in your future.
Hello, I am sorry about your issue. Your hook up should have nothing to do with the remote. You should get some functions like on/off, volume control. Thank you, Onkyo, USA
I have to ask the obvoius, did you get the manual, have you used the onscreen menu to set up the speakers, you can calibrate the speaker levels on the TV screen if you use the S video or RCA vidoe connection .have you turned off tape monitor?
In general all equalizers, being designed to be in a Tape Monitor loop, have the option to Equalize either the Source or the Tape or nothing. Check for that control and toggle it. My old ADC SS-525X has pushbuttons whose settings (Tape/Source) are not easily determined. I always have to play around with it to know which is selected.
I'm betting your EQ is processing the program that would head out to an attached tape deck.
