Hi. The agitator is fastened to the agitator shaft and its movement is driven either by splines or a simple clutch assembly, which is removable as well. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction.

Various makes and models differ in how the agitator is removed. In some newer models, the agitator just lifts straight up and out. However, in most models you will have to preform a combination of the following steps. First remove the fabric softener dispenser, if any. It should either lift or screw off. Next remove the cap. It may lift off, screw off or failing that, it may need to be pried off.

Beneath the cap some agitators are secured in place by a bolt. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove that bolt. Some Maytags may have a screw near to the bottom of the agitator post that must be removed. Now try to lift the agitator straight up, possibly with a little back and forth rocking motion. Use caution when pulling, the agitator may come loose suddenly and hit you in the face or send you flying backward.

If the agitator is particularly stubborn, you can loop some rope under one side of the agitator at the bottom and then up over a broom handle. Now loop it again under the other side of the agitator and back up to the broom. Brace one end of the broom handle against the top of the washer and lift up on the other end. Double check that you have removed anything that may be securing the agitator in place. Do not use too much force or you may damage the washer cabinet, agitator or injure yourself.

GE designed it that way. About the only difference is the agitation length of time.

Washer only spins

Have you tried to unplug the machine, sometimes the control boards can get stuck and if you unplug it for say 30 seconds then plug it back in, it may reset itself. otherwise you may have to call someone these are very complicated machines.

GE Profile Prodigy Machine not agitating

If the motor runs when it is suppose to be agitating, but the agitator does not move, pull the agitator straight up and out of the machine. Sometimes this is difficult, but you can slip a belt or similar object under the agitator, attach it to a broom handle and yank up on it. Now take the bolt out of the agitator drive collar and remove it. If you can not turn the splined transmission shaft with your fingers you are in luck and should be able to just replace the can shaped agitator drive spline. (part number WH49X10042 ) If you can turn that splined shaft with your fingers you are looking at a new transmission.

Agitator loose

Just reach down between the basket and the agitator, and lift really hard straight up. Be sure not to hit yourself in the head when it pops loose. GE agitators just snap on to the air-bell underneith. Be sure that bell isnt loose after you remove. Good Luck!!!!

Spin and Agitate problem on GE Profile Prodigy WPSE4200A

This machine uses an electric water pump. I would check to motor. Remove the front panel and operate the machine to see if the motor is working. Check this by listening to the motor and watching the belt. If you hear the motor but the belt does'nt move then there may be a problem with the pulley or motor clutch assy.

As far as not draining or pumping water ? Check the wiring from the pump to the control panel. If these wires are alright then i suspect the pump.
