You can view panoramic pictures on the computer. If your panoramic pictures have not been combined, their is software that can do that for you. Here is a free panorama stitching software from microsoft that you can try: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ICE/
Not in the camera, but you could shoot a panoramic and crop it later. That is what most of the panoramic camera of that era did anyways. Use your widest lens.
A panoramic photo on 35mm film is just cutting off the top and bottom. even if you can't set the camera that way, you can ask your local photo store to print any shot that way for you. Usually 2x the price of 4x6.
FW upgrade is very easy:
I have the same problem with the Display (after 8000 pictures) the LCD only works in Panoramic mode (or in remote capture mode when doing a remote capture from PC). In all other modes the camera LCD does not display anything.
In order to upgrade the FW just connect the camera to your TV (using the cable that comes with the camera) The TV will the display the menu and you can do the FW upgrade.
I upgraded the camera this way to FW 1.01 but unfortunatly the display problem still exists.
It seems that you have been selecting Panoram view to shoot photos. Go to menu and change the image options and select SHQ or whatever and not panorama. This should solve the problem. Panorama view shows the grid lines all over the screen and it is meant for taking 360 degree panoramic views.
