SY EF code on display. Where can I get directions for replacing evaporator fan motor?

This is listed as a SY EF error by Frigidaire (the manufacturer of the refrigerator for the Kenmore line). The error indicates a problem with the system evaporator. The evaporator fan motor may have a problem or the sensor has an issue. If you can hear the fan and feel the air moving in the freezer, then check the sensor. If you don't hear/feel the air flow, then check the evaporator fan motor. If ice built up around the evaporator, the fan motor may have burned out trying to keep running. In that case, you'll need to fix the cause of the ice build up and replace the fan motor.

ANSWER Hello D. W. The error code that you are getting indicates a Evaporator fan 241509402 failure. You want to check the wiring at the fan motor and at the control board. Check for 12vdc to fan between red and brown wires. Check for variant voltage (depending on high or low speed) between yellow and brown. If it checks ok then replace the Evaporator fan. If error code still exists then replace main control board 5303918514. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. This error is a SY EF (system evaporator fault). The evaporator sensor is not reading enough air flow through the system. The problem could be the evaporator sensor or the evaporator motor.

It can also be linked to a faulty control board. To rule out a problem between the fan and the control board, you can check for 12V DC between the brown and the red wires. You can also check for voltage variations between the yellow and brown wires. (This voltage will depend on if the fan is on high or low speed.) If the voltages are good, replace the motor. If the voltages are faulty, replace the control board.

If you can hear the evaporator running and feel air moving in the freezer, the sensor is more likely to be faulty. (The evaporator is inside the freezer at the back.)

Your evaporator fan is not spinning.

Check to make sure there isn't any ice build up jamming up the fan. If there isn't then it's either the evaporator fan, or the main board.

If I'm not mistaken EF error code stands for Evaporator Fan which is the fan motor in the back of the freezer section. That would explain the noise you heard. The fan could possibly be frozen or stuck or the motor actually went bad and needs replaced. Without that fan running you will get very little cooling.

SY: Defective evaporator system. Check evaporator fan, thermostat and heater.

EF: Evaporator Fan defective. Test and eventually replace the evaporator fan.

The problem is likely the evaporator fan. Before replacing the fan test the other parts comprised in the evaporator system.
