Probably the number one reason for this error is the infiltration of dust through the DVD feed slot and onto the laser, where the dust then interferes with the reading of digitized information contained in the disc. If you're capable of doing so, you can determine if this is the cause by doing the following:
1. Unplug the unit from AC outlet.
2. Remove the chassis cover.
3. Clean out all dust from inside the unit, and on or around the laser head using compressed air. Don't use unnecessarily excessive pressure to do this, and don't touch your hand, or the air nozzle, to anything.
4. Replace the chassis cover, plug in the AC power cord, and try a DVD after making sure the DVD is clean and undamaged. If this doesn't cure the problem, or if you are not capable of performing the above steps properly then you need to either take the unit to a repair shop or purchase a new DVD player.

SOURCE: My Sylvania TV DVD combo

Unfortunately the internal DVD player has failed on this unit, it is quite expensive and very difficult to repair. However you can easily just bypass the built in player and use an external DVD player, which can be had for $39 and change with free shipping for a very nice one here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IBHUU8?ie=UTF8&tag=dependascient-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001IBHUU8

This is definitely the easiest and quickest fix, I have seen many of these internal DVD players fail and to get them fixed is hundreds of dollars, definitely not worth it, but a regular dvd player attached to the TV works perfectly and is what the customer chooses to do 99% of the time.

Thanks so much, let me know if you have more questions about this, just reply to my answer here and I will be glad to help you further.

SOURCE: Supergirl 13 color tv/dvd combo plays CDs but not DVDs...

If cleaning did not fix it the optical pickup for that unit is damaged in some way---if the set has audio/video INPUT jacks on it just buy a DVD player and hook it to the set.

If no jacks you are finished--DVD portion of the unit if available costs more than the entire set.

SOURCE: why does my combo tv/dvd only play dvds in black and white? is it broken?

Check its settings. Get into its menu, and select picture settings. Set the color system to 'Auto' there. If wrong setting is done there, only B/W picture will be displayed.

I have a JVC TV/DVD combo and the DVD stopped working

This is a common problem with DVDs. You must not leave them idle for such long periods. Second, you must always leave a disc inside the player. It protects the optical lance from dust. There may be some dust deposit on the lance or the loading rubber belt may have gone lose or the spindle motor which rotates the disc might have gone slow. But to solve this problem you will need a qualified technician. Good luck.

No sound from pre-recorded dvds in tv/dvd combo

Check the sound setup to TV. Refer its user manual for details. Check whether the audio format to the recorded disc do match with to that of TVs.

The machine keeps stating bad disc, for all dvds. We have the GoVideo DVD VCR combo... we tried playing several different dvds and the machine keeps coming up with "bad disc".

It could just be dirt on the lazer/lens. Try cleaning it with a good brand name lens cleaner for DVD/CD. If that doesn't do the trick there might be damage to the lens, or an electrical fault.

My Sony DVD/VCR combo will play cds but not dvds. I took the top of the player off and I can see that the dvd spins but it won't play. It used to play everything very well but just stopped working...

Please clean laser lens with good quality cotton bud gently and check dvd disc playback, if still does not play, replace optical lens block.
Let me know model number of your Sony DVD-VCR combo to provide you optical laser block part number info.
Thanks.

Dvd player won't work, says no disk

Greetings,

I do not have good news for either of you. These are notorious for having cheap lasers in them and their original purchase price usually makes a repair cost prohibitive. If you are having an intermittent problem where the disc will freeze - then play - then freeze - then play this is often the first indicator that the laser is failing. One easy way to confirm this is to play a compact disc in the player. CDs are easier for the player to read than DVDs are. If it plays CD and you continue to experience problems with DVDs this usually indicates a laser failing. Remember, when buying a consumer electronic product, the price of a thing usually reflects the quality of that thing.

As for cleaning discs; if a laser has enough residue built up on it to prevent the error correction system from overcoming it, then the microfine brushes on a cleaning disc will probably be ineffective at removing that build up. Cleaning discs are akin to the old VCR cleaning tapes, usually ineffective.

Sorry for the bad news,
Rob
