If your belt is new and it is loose, then you have routed your belt wrong.

Replaced belt the blade stays engaged

Check that you have routed the belt correctly. Did you happen to go to the outside of the idler? Also is the belt the correct size requiring the idler to put tension on the belt to drive it Belt should be loose when idler is disengaged.. See sketch:

Auto store and serpintine belt

If it seems to short it is likely because the belt is not routed right. To see if it is the right belt stretch the new and old belt out side by side and if it's wrong you should be able to notice the differane.

Belt too loose

Are you sure you have the belt routed correctly? You can verify by going to repairclinic.com and clicking on the "Repair Help" link at the top of the page. On the following page is a link entitled "Dryer Belt Diagrams" under the "Special Features" section. You will need to view diagram E for Maytag. NOTE: There is a tension spring on your idler. Make sure the tension spring has not come loose or fallen off. I hope this helps you. If you have questions, please let me know.
