To get windows to detect your CD drive again do this:

a. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key
b. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.)
c. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
d. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
e. Expand the "Control" Key
f. Expand the "Class" Key
g. Look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
h. Highlight this key by left clicking once on it
i. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
j. Exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

What are the pros and cons of upgrading your OS from win7 starter to windows 7 ultimate? Given that the processor is N450 on a netbook.

Hello,

There are basically no con's to upgrading. You will gain some features when you upgrade. You may have to install new device drivers for some devices like mouse, external hard drive to work properly, but this is unlikely.

Windows 7 Starter does not include:

* Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the Windows Basic or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
* Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
* The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
* 64 bit version
* Multi-monitor support.
* DVD playback.
* Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
* Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
* Domain support for business customers.
* XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.

So, you can gain some additional features when you upgrade!

Windows media center file issue

Some premium channels have DRM locks so that they aren't able to be copied or played on other players, which is most likely what's happening here.

Media Edition DVR Recording

It is most likely due to a media codec issue.

These issues are often difficult to remedy since many different software applications and plugins will install codecs.

Try reinstalling the DVD decoder (probably Sonic Cineplayer, and make sure the update is installed from Dell's website) support.dell.com downloads for your system, or http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?releaseid=R143248&fileid=191233

I usually do not like to install more Codecs, but you could install a Codec pack such as http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

Hope this helps

No unfortunately XP home and XP media edition are different but not completely. The only difference is the entertainment factor like TV control and live recording and pausing , viewing photos etc and media center is considered to be a bit more secure than XP home but i find this just a wrong perception of people as i also have XP home and also had media center, makes no difference at all regarding security but yes if u want much more features or facilities as far as entertainment is considered media center edition is far more good than XP home.......
IF U INSTALL XP HOME THAT DOES NOT MEAN U INSTALLED XP MEDIA CENTER
Now there are 2 ways to solve ur problem
1. Either get a NEW disc from microsoft or any computer shop for media center and then install it.
OR
2. Install XP home on your system and then try to put the CD for media center , it will update XP to media center . In this way u will get the media center back and u will also not lose any previous stored data.
NOTE: In both the above cases u will have to get the CD for Media center......
Wat matters is losing the data that is already stored on your system.
BUT AGAIN I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND HERE IS THAT INSTALLING XP HOME WILL NOT GET BACK U TO MEDIA CENTER AS THEY ARE DIFFERENT BUT IT MAKES NOT DIFFERENCE WHETHER IT IS XP HOME OR MEDIA CENTER AS ONLY DIFFERENCE IS ENTERTAINMENT>>> IN THE WORLD THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE USING XP HOME THAN MEDIA CENTER>>>

I would recommend to cont. with XP home

Windows Media center recorded TV playback

Some possible causes can be system heat causing the video card to freeze. Sometimes it can also be related to the video driver or MPEG2 decoder. Make sure to use the right decoder and filter for the video playback.
