The refrig has stinky smell after not opening it for two weeks without any spoiled food.

Everything is working normal and no smell in the bottom freezer. No spoiled food ever inside at all. I never hook up the water to it. The smell keep coming back. Check the back, clean the evaporator coil, the dripping houses are not clogged. Did notice there use to be some louder noise comes on once a while like from motor/compressor Now, I never hear such noise again. Power Off/Power on and run the self diagnostic and it did not report any error code. The LED were dark before it returns to normal op mode.

Is it a moldy odor or rotten food odor?

I suggest cleaning interior and then spraying with odor remover like: Nok Out Odor Eliminator and Sanitizer

Testimonial: "It is NOT moldy/mildew smell, more like rotten food with a sharp smell. There was never any spilled or rotten food inside. Some days the smell get stronger and some day it is less. I have put baking soda, coffee, etc insides to absorb the smell. It seems it is "regenerating" the smell from the vent. All surface had been cleaned couple time. The dripping pan behind is a little wet but I don't see mildew forming."

How about checking underneath the unit? Maybe have a couple of people tilt the unit just a bit so you can view the bottom.
    At your own risk.

Used wrong water filter. Now that we replaced with correct filter, there is a horrible odor in the refrigerator.

Hello Mary;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

Putting in the wrong water filter will not effect the smell in your refrigerator. At times the granules in a water filter will break down and get into your water dispenser and ice cube tray. This should not create a bad smell, just cloudy water.

Your plastic liner in your refrigerator has pores and holds odor. You have something in your fresh food section or freezer that is spoiled. Your fresh food section receives cooling air from your freezer. If you have a spoiled product in your freezer you will not smell it because it is frozen. But, as the cooling air goes into your fresh food section and cools down you will smell it.

Find the bad product in your freezer and discard.

With a 50% solution of white vinegar and water wash the plastic liner.

Now you can put a tray of baking soda in your unit, until you purchase deodorizers based on temperature requirements, one especially designed for the freezer section and one for fresh food section. These deodorizer are about $12.00 each.

Try Lowe's and Home depot.

I have a Whirlpool mod. ED5LHEXD00 refrig. I left home for 3 weeks in Dec. with the house temp. set to 50 deg. F. I got home and discovered that the refrig./freezer was at room temp and all the food had...

If Fridge working fine now, the problem may be is Hydro Grid.

When the fridge just start, the compressor is running with high pressure of Freon. If Hydro power has voltage surge or power Off/On ( suddenly ), the compressor should be stuck, the overheat protection switch will actived, than fridge will stop working.

The noice of "click" - properly is overheat switch auto-reset.

empty the unit and put a dish of charcoal in the frig and the freezer. Let it run for a week and see if that helps. Some odors will get into the plastic and insulation and cannot be removed.

My 2 month old Amana Refridgerator with Freezer on

If your sure about spoiled food. Spoiled lemons are one of the worst, and the machine has not been abused, it's a problem of the selling dealer. Fan motors have been known to create an odor when their windings start to burn. Plastic items that become detached from the interior cabinet and wind up laying on the defrost heater which gets very hot during defrost is another, however, I would demand a service call (free) since everything on it is under warranty. Make sure it's creating the odor when the tech shows up.

What is the best temperature for the bottom freezer and refrig?

Set both dials in the middle.

If you have a nearly full freezer, add 1 dial unit.
If you have a nearly full refrigerator, add 1 dial unit.

If your freezer is less than half full, step down 1 dial unit
Refrigerator should not be less than mid-point on dial (it gets open more often).

This is a good starting point, adjust in a month or so.

Stinky washer

I have the same problem. The solution is to use bleach with your whites. It's better to use a normal amount of bleach frequently rather than a lot of bleach only once in a while.

Fridge - with freezer on top

Check the bottom refrigerator door gasket for any possible spilled food or drink that may have leaked onto it. Clean this area with warm soapy water. It may solve your problem. Also check under the drawers and make sure there is nothing there. If there is a drain under the drawers clean it and put some hot water with bleach into it to flush it out.
