Yes it can be replaced. But first make sure the noise isn't coming from the guide roller assembly or coupler which is the plastic part in the bottom of the microwave that turns the turntable. .

Turntable has stopped rotating

If the oven is still heating, but the carousel isn't turning, this problem is commonly attributed to a turntable motor that has worn out and may need to be replaced. The motor is attached to the center plastic piece (called a turntable shaft, turntable ring or coupler) under the middle of the glass tray. The following link explains how to access and replace the motor:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3555716-replacing_a_turntable_motor_on_a_microwa

This is a very simple repair, that usually is not expensive. The price will be determined by the model and manufacturer. This repair can also be performed on an over the range model microwave oven WITHOUT uninstalling it.

You can refer to any of the following websites for comparison:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The first three sites listed have helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you with locating and properly identifying the part(s) you may need.

The average price for a motor is about $35 to $45. If your model number is not listed at all the sites, use the part numbers from the Sears site and use them for your search criteria. The model numbers don't always cross reference, but the part numbers do. If you need assistance identifying the correct part number, please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER and I can assist you. I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE: Even though the carousel may not be turning, you can still use the microwave while awaiting parts. You will need to physically rotate whatever you are heating about midway through the cook time to ensure even heating. Early model microwave ovens were not equipped with a rotating carousel and this was the common routine.

GE microwave oven squeals as carousel is rotating. Noise stops in a minute or so but begins anew when the unit is used again.

If it is the wheel on the turntable that squeels, wash the turntable in strong solution of washing up liquid and water.
If it does it without a turntable fitted, change the turntable motor.

Replacing the turntable motor.

The motor assembly is fixed to the base of the oven usually with two screws and access i obtained by removing the inspection plate directly beneath the motor. It is usally a plug in synchronus motor that revolves at a few revs per minute but the plastic cogs in the motors gear box fail and the motor assembly must be replaced. They are fairly inexpensive and obtainable usually from a domestic appliance repair shop.
If you feel confident, disconnect it from the mains power, remove anything in the cavity and turn it upside down if it is a tabletop model, a little more complicated if it is built in!
Remove the inspection plate and disconnect the motor. Remove the motor and go and get a new one. Re fit it and put the microwave back in its position. Plug it back in, with the turntable and plate. Put a cup of water on the plate inside of the oven and heat for 20 seconds to check the plate goes round.
Hope this helps.

I have a microwave oven i purchased jan/07.Themodel#nn-s605wf,serial#6BN6040597,. mY TURNTABLE will not turn can you tell me why.THANKS

Remove the glass turntable, then the roller ring. Then seta glas of water in the unit and turn it on for 5 to 10 seconds. Look through the door window and see if the drive hub is rotating. If it is, then check the underside of the glass table to match up the drive hub. If it isn't turming, the drive, then it is internal and should have a 1 yr warrantee minimum. Remember, the, the turntable and drive must engage each other and the roller ring in place. Good Luck, and let me know please. One more thing, make sure there isn't a Turntable on/off swirch set in the off position. Good Luck, Ne

Turntable sounds like its grinding

Sounds like the bottom bearing has siezed. This is then rotating on it's mountings instead of nice ball bearings.

Just check it's not simply any support wheels you can easily get to.
It is possible to access this from inside. If you wish to repair it, unplug, and remove case screws. The drive assembly is easily visable from underneath. If you can get the main bearing off, clean it in parafin or WD40 and use a little light oil on it.

Make sure you replace the case properly - with all screws before attempting to start again.
The microwave generator is only active when electricity is applied, and usually the door assembly is integral to the microwave chamber.

I need a new ring that goes underneath the glass turntable.

That would be part # 5889W2A005J "ROTATING RING ASSEMBLY"
