My touchpad stopped working out of nowhere. How

Have you tried opening the laptop up again to see if perhaps the contacts under the left-click button were misaligned or something? To me, the easiest way (meaning not opening up the laptop again) is to just double-tap on the touchpad to left-click, or just get a cheap wireless mouse.

Most probably, your friend disconnected the cable connecting the touchpad to the motherboard while disassembling the laptop to fix the DC power pin, & forgot to reconnect it back.
You will need to partially disassemble the laptop again & reconnect the touchpad to the motherboard.

check to see if there is a hot key that turns off the touchpad. if you can supply the model number of the machine i can look for the manual to see if there is.

if this is the touchpad, try to reinstall the touchpad driver. You can uninstall it through the device manager while using an external mouse, then download the latest driver from your system manufacturer's web site. After that, make sure the touchpad is enabled and if this does not work, you may need a replacement touchpad, though you may also try system restore or OS reinstall.

i found the issue you might have a bug where after it installs the FN Key actually locks out your touchpad. I just figured this out after installing all known drivers to man on my laptop. Lol, go figure a vista recovery bug created this error. Hope this helps you out (Hold in FN Key + The Mouse disable/enable key to possibly fix the touchpad)

If you have any dust or food particles in the cracks between the touchpad and the laptop, be sure to clean those out with a can of pressurized air. Those will sometimes cause the touchpad to think you are touching it on two places at once, which will make the touchpad jump all over the place.

I resently had the same problem on my HP laptop and search Google for possible solutions. No solution works until I tried Windovs Update and then got 5 alternatives - Synaptics PS/2 port TouchPad was one of them. I update and restart and finally solve this problem.

As I understand your keyboard is now working and your usb mouse. But the touchpad does not work.

Have you or someone opened up your laptop recently? If so it is possible the touchpad was not connected properly.

Can you please post the exact name of your laptop. I'll see what else I can figure out for you.
