Try a reboot/reset
Hold the start button for about 10 seconds.
Wait 10 seconds then restart as normal.
It will take longer to start up than is usual, but only this time and should start as normal after that.
If that doesn't fix it then you may have to search the Kindle help pages.

Testimonial: "tried that but no success. when I plug in charger the light changes from green to amber. still stuck on home page"

Sorry, Olive. That is about the extent of my knowledge I'm afraid. It has worked for me in the past so I didn't need to explore any further. Try the Kindle forum online as they are very helpful as I am sure your problem isn't unique. Good luck, Steve.

My kindle will not turn off

Did you try

Instructions
  1. Frozen Screen or Unresponsive Kindle
    • 1 Unplug the Kindle.
    • 2 Move the power button to the right and release. You should see a green LED light for two seconds.

    • 4 Turn the device back on by sliding the power button to the right and releasing it.
    Perform a Hard Reset
    • 5 Perform a hard reset if the previous steps are unsuccessful or if the Kindle screen is showing lines.
    • 6 Slide the power button to the right.
    • 7 Hold for 15 seconds.
    • 8 Recharge the battery if the device continues to be unresponsive.
    • 9 Restart the Kindle after charging.

My kindle will not turn off. I can't get it to do anything.

Make sure that the kindle is fully charged. Plug your kindle into the wall charger, a yellow light will light up. When the yellow light turns green, your kindle is fully charged. Then try turning on your device. If the device still doesn't respond, do a hard reset by holding the power switch for 15 seconds

Frozen screen that is not readable or very responsive

Your screen is broken. Amazon should give you are replacement. If that fails, you can get the part at Kindle Repair and there is a guide that shows you how to open a kindle and install parts at Kindle Repair Guide.
