Camera electronics are fubar - should not be acting like that. Repair on those units is usually not cost effective due to labor and parts cost.

How to fix a Fujifilm FinePix S4000

some times small particles or grit get into the lens housing and prevent movement... try holding the camera vertical with the lens pointing down and tap the back of the camera firmly a couple of times... keep the camera in this postion and switch the camera ON and OFF a couple of times to try and loosen any foreign particles... you may have to repeat this procedure several more times before you achieve success...

Re Fuji finepix, keep getting message turn off camera, turn on again as lens won't extend, so camera not useable, batteries fresh. any ideas? thanks, robin

Remove and reinsert the batteries or disconnect and reconnect the AC power adapter/DC coupler. If the problem persists, contact your FUJIFILM dealer.
Before that:
Carefully check if and eventualy where the lens is blocked. Don't touch the front lens. Feeling for any movement on the edge not on the glass. If there is not any obstruction, then perhaps the motor that should move the lens is defect. If you can find anything that blocks the lens, ask a technician if he / she can remove is. Or else I'm affraid you have to visit your FUJIFILM dealer.

Fujifilm finepix J32 Zoom error

Had exactly the same problem with my fujifilm j32, after reading a few things on the net and definitely couldn't be bothered to waste money and time sending off a camera that cost a few quid I took matters into my own hands!
I turned the camera on and quickly grabbed the lens to stop it retracting again, once it was held out I gave it a good 'wiggle' moving it in all directions fairly firmly!
I then pressed the on/off button again to switch it off and then turned it back on and low and behold it turned on and worked perfectly after!
Hope this helps others cause it could save you a lot of time and money!

LENS PROBLEM

The slightly open shutter is the reason for this problem. Thank God you mentioned it.
Solution: Try with your fingers to shift the shutter “blades” back and forth to see if they move freely. If they do no move freely it maens the shutter “blasdes” and stuck by particles/dust/something. So you just continue to shift them like that untill they are free again. Once they are free turn your camera back on and it should perform as normal.

Panasonic dmc-fz5

I posted a solution yesterday on Fixya, but can't find it. Same problem, same camera, solution reached on Feb 10 2009 after a couple days of frustration. I gently wiggled the lens by pushing my fingers one on either side (not the outer ring, but the inner ring, but keep your fingers off the glass part). It moves perhaps a fraction of a millimeter, but it moves. After I did that, the problem went away. It's hard to describe, just a gentle 3 or 4 times push on either side; you may have to change finger positions to get the movement. It apparently only takes this to get the lens back on track. Good luck, it's a great camera. Lee

FOCUS ERROR

I also had this problem. When starting the focus error alert came. Trying to move the focus button also triggered this. When I turned it off, the lens did not pull back. After being close to trowing it away, I used a little bit more force than before and turned the lens manually. I heard a click, and than it worked again. PS: Follow this tip on your own risk.....

Lense won't open.

Hello Ragamuffin, This is a lens assembly mechanism problem. It is a delicate part of any camera. The lens assembly is composed of several servomotors, coils, some sensors and the actual lens. It does the following jobs: it extends the lens back and forth achieves focus by moving the lens zooms the lens by rotating them in the same time as the whole objective is moved back and forth Each of these operations is controlled by some servomotors who actually move these parts and are also connected to some sensors that pass the readings back to a main processing unit. When you open the camera this processing unit will check to see if the lens assembly is able to do all of these 3 things. Failure to comply with even one of them will result in the error you see. "Lens error" is a generic message, doesn't mean that the lens itself are damaged, could be the connector to their servomotors, sensor failure, some coils that are out of position and things like that. They are all related to the lens assembly. Because this is a VERY fragile part of any camera I don't suggest you to try a DiY repair because you can damage the lens even further. Even service centers have problems repairing this, most time it is done under a microscope and some times it simply can't be fixed. This problems occur most of the time in corelation with the camera being dropped or received some shocks but it can happen out from nowhere, just like that. I would recomand you to go to a service center. Try not the big ones that represent large corporations (because they are expensive), instead look for a smaller one. Tell them you have a lens assembly problem, ask them to make you a diagnostic and then ask for a cost estimate BEFORE they actually repair the camera. If the lens assembly is damaged beyound repair it will need to be changed as a whole, including all connectors, CCD sensor and so on. This could cost from $70 - $200 excluding labor parts that can be about $100. Therefore you should ask them a cost estimate. If your camera is still in waranty you just need to call one authorised service center to have it fixed for free. Good luck and please post back if you encounter any other problems.
