My netgears nat type needs to be set from moderate to open so i can talk with friends and play games on my xbox 360's live connection

To do this you need to open Ports on the router, called as Port Forwarding
To achieve this you have to open ports 3074 and 88 (TCP/UDP)
Go to http://portforward.com/ Select your router model and you can forward ports on your router with the help of Screenshots on this Website

New router will not hook up to my laptop.

Check your physical connection first. From the modem, it should be connected to the router's Internet port, then your computer must be connected to port 1 on the back of the router. Then do a power cycle, run the setup CD. If it doesn't work, you need to manually configure the router. You may need assistance from Netgear tech support. Call their toll free number
