My previous Kenwoods had screw-in antennas. The TK-3131 appears to have a copper spring inside the plastic/rubber sheath. How to replace?
I do not know this specific radio model. However, most of these have the spring (antenna) soldered onto the main board. That is the antenna. Find a broken radio and carefully remove the sheath (antenna cover) and glue it on. In the meantime, you could try a number of things since they do not sell the parts: triple wrap in high quality electrical tape (HIGH quality). Use RTV sealant and "mold" your own using a screwdriver or tools of choice. I made one this way, them wrapped it in tape. Do not use anything metallic or with metal in it. But GMRS radios are pretty much limited in parts. All brands.
Testimonial: "Aaah. Makes sense. When I was examining the antenna base, it looked like it was integrated into the radio's "guts". I'll go with the electrical tape option for awhile because the unit still works, though I'll replace it with a higher-tier Kenwood with removable/replaceable antenna. I use it for motorbike adventure travel and it sees its fair share of stowage and weather challenges. Appreciate the quick response and insight."
