You either need to replace the thermocouple or the (thermopile) millivolt generator depending on which your unit uses.
A thermocouple has a small diameter probe, about 3/16" in diameter and 2" long, that is mounted within the pilot flame and has a very small copper tube, 1/8" diameter, that is connected to the main valve.
The probe of a millivolt generator is larger, Approximately 3/8" in diameter and about 2" long, and has a cable with two wires that connect to the main valve. Usually one red wire and the other white.

Totai heater wont stay on after lit

Without a pilot flame sensor signal the pilot light will not stay on and the heater won't work. Try Replacing the pilot flame sensor, the pilot flame burns on to it and it connects to the valve. It looks like a wire.

Pilot turns on but when I switch to turn it on,

When you light the pilot, are you holding it down for 30-60 seconds. When you release the pilot button, does the pilot flame stay lit? Or does it only go out when you turn the knob to on position. Make sure the pilot flame is heating the end of the thermocouple and that it's a strong blue flame, not a lazy yellow pilot flame. Make sure the tip of the thermocouple is not burn't off, which usually happens with lazy yellow pilot flames. Replace thermocouple is nothing else works.

Pilot lights, but when the button is released it goes out main burner will not light

Button must be held down for about a minute after lighting pilot, if it still doesn`t stay light sounds like the thermocouple is bad. Looks like a skinny copper wire runs from the pilot light valve to pilot light flame, can be purchased at any hardware store for $5 or $10.

I HAVE A DESA LP VENTLESS FIREPLACE AND THE PILOT WILL NOT STAY LIT

the heater makes use of a millivolt generator which generates a small dc voltage (500-750mv) that is applied to the pilot valve of your main gas valve. when you light your pilot, the flame bathes the generator with a flame. after a delay you release the pilot button. if the generator is working, the pilot valve will stay lit. if the generator is not working the flame will go out as soon as you release the pilot button. change the generator.
