5 years standing is a long time. Carburetor float will be stuck. Pull the plugs and see if they are wet and also if you have a spark.
Strip and clean carb and jets.
Check fuel tap and fuel delivery.
Drain any fuel and replace with new.
Replace the spark plug.
No lights is odd. Check if there are fuses?
your reverse over ride not working , u need to open switch box see if you have power to the switch when bike is running with a test light then with brake on and in reverse check the output wire to see if you have power out when depressed be sure you have the wheels up in the air when you do this for safety sake
try to remove the positive cable from the battery and switch on all lights,headlights ,park lights,step on the brake pedals , switch on ignition but do not start it. this is just to drain all remain electricity. then after doing so, switch off all the above mention lights and ignition. install back the positive cable to the battery. step on brakes pedal and start your engine,now try to shift gears from reverse to N then to P .
my 2003 polaris 550 indy's reverse doesn't work maybe once in a great while it will work but like tonight i rode for about 1 hour and tried to put it in reverse and it didnt work it died down and stalled out then started it back up and tried it again and it went forward i need help and information
Easiest first, put dry gas in and run it if that don't work, try draining gas, take tank off, drain carbs. You may have water in tank. If not next best thing is try changing the coil. If it backfires it is electrical.
remember on early models there was a safety pin that had to be held to switch to reverse,,,your 500 does this automatically so check for safety pin hookup. Could be brush or
grass jammed in where it moves.
