When your Kindle is charging, a lightning bolt appears on the battery icon at the top of the Home screen. The indicator light on the bottom edge of your device turns amber while the battery is charging and green when it is fully charged. If you don't see a light, your Kindle is not charging.
There are usually 4 side by side green bars if the battery is fully charged. You can think of each bar as 25% power, so (4) bars is 100%, (3) bars is 75%, (2) bars is 50% and (1) bar is 25%.
Your question was posted under the Nuvi 680 GPS, so I am assuming this is the model that you have.
On the main screen, you will see a green battery status indicator in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. The battery is divided into 4 parts. Each part represents 1/4 power. So if you have one green bar, that indicates that the battery has 1/4 of power left. If there are 3 bars, that indicates that there is 3/4 power left.
When the unit is charging, you will see a yellow lightning bolt appear over the green battery status icon.
When the lightning bolt is not there, this means the unit is running off of the battery.
When leaving the unit to charge, press and hold the power button until you see that the screen says Charging Battery. A few seconds later, the screen will go blank to save energy.
Pressing the screen again later will either say Charging Battery or Battery Charge Complete.
Touch the lightning bolt icon in the function area until the flash icon and the letter A appears on the left side of the display. This activates the automatic flash.
Touch the lightning bolt icon again until the letter A disappears. This forces the manual flash mode.
Touch the lightning bolt icon again until the eyeball appears on the left side of the display. This activates the red-eye reduction feature.
To turn off the flash function touch the lightning bolt icon repeatedly until the no-flash symbol (lighting bolt in a circle with a line through it) appears on the left.

Touch the lightning bolt icon area again until the eyeball icon appears on the left. This activates the red-eye reduction mode.
To turn off the flash, touch the lightning bolt icon area again until the no-flash icon (lightning bolt inside a circle) appears on the left.
This is covered on pages 13-14 of the manual. If you've misplaced your manual, you can download one from the manufacturer's web site at http://vivitar.com

The lightning bolt is used to indicate an electrical problem but then, you know that already :-(
Try removing the battery pack and start it from AC only; some battery types don't like to be ignored, they can have individual shorted cells.
Mine had that too. It means the backup battery is low. It's located in a panel behind the LCD screen. You can find details on page 19 of the users manual. If you don't have your manual, you can download it for free from canon's website.
