My handle broke while the pot was full with very hot liquid and a cooked chicken. My model number 38601. Thankfully, only a small portion landed on me - what a mess all over the floor! After the accident, I looked at the intact handle and there are cracks in that one as well. I have only used this cooker a few times so I am sure that there are more units out there with cracked handles. The cracks appear to be starting at the rivit locations. I called Rival and this model number is not on a recall. They have none in stock. The base hit the floor on it's edge and now there are lots of rattles inside it. I had this happen once. I contacted Rival about mine and they exchanged the whole unit. They even sent a box to ship it in prepaid! The whole process took about 3 weeks.

I have the same problem on mine so I was doing some internet research. Your crock pot is on the recall list. Go to www.rivalrecall.com and register for a new base. Your cord will have a date stamped on it. If it is between 0199 and 1802 (1st week of 1999 through the 18th week of 2002) Rival will replace your base.
You say it's somewhat new - could it have been manufactured between 1999 and 2004? If so, check out www.rivalrecall.com for information about a safety recall due to breaking handles.
take it back to any store for replacement if it was a gift. Or mail it to the main office of manufactuer>>> in at the instruction in the box .

Call Hamilton Beach. This crock pot was recalled because of threat of severe burn. My handle broke and I dropped my lid. When I called to buy a new lid, I was told of the recall. They will send you an envelope. You then send back the end of the cord. I got a whole new cooker, crock and lid in the mail. : )
