We power it off, re log in push home, do everything possible but it still black screens and logs her out every time we press it
Do a backup of the device and reset it. It should work after the reset.

You have the cables to connect the Leap Pad 3 to the PC?
Okay I will tell you how to...First connect the cable to the pc, open the "Leap Pad Connect software (If you don't have it I added a download link for leap Pad Connect for Leap Pad 3)http://lfcdownload.leapfrog.com/en/pc/le... (just copy & paste in your laptop or desktop browser to download the application) then open the app, go to "Settings" tab on the right corner , click and first click the "repair" button, check the Leap Pad, if it fixed dont make nothing more, but if "repair" don't fix the problem sadly you have to reset it to factory settings. This sadly should erase all the content of the leap pad and put it to it factory default setting and should fix the problem.
