When you install Windows 10, it usually finds most of the peripheral devices and installs drivers for them. This includes printers. However, it seems that they do not include the scan software for the all-in-ones. What you should do is either reinstall the printer drivers using the installation media for the device, or go to the Epson website and download the driver package for your machine and OS. If there is no Windows 10 driver package, most Windows 8.1 packages will work. Before you install the driver package, however, go to the Printers section of Windows 10 and delete the existing printer, otherwise yo will wind up with two entries in the section and not know which one is which.

What does Communication Error mean?

I am guessing that you are using Windows 7. If so go to Control panel 'Hardware and Sound' Printers and select Remove a Printer. You may then unplug the printer usb connection and restart your computer. When the computer has restarted , you may go to the link below to download the most current drivers and install them .
Do not plug in the usb connection until you are told to do so. Also, the printer may select a default connection to LPT1 , which is a parallel port connection (apparently this printer likes to do so , and this will give you your "communication error" ). If it does, go to printers in control panel (see above) , right click on the icon for your printer , select "properties" , and left click on the " ports " tab. Make sure that the port selected is USB001 or similar and NOT LPT1.

Epson scan icon missing

I have the same problem. Re-installing the 141mb Epson software does not fix the problem. I can print just fine but since there is no scan icon I am unable to scan. If I try scanning from the printer, it says "communication error". I'm fast approaching "junk it: stage and will search for another printer brand. Wasting way too much time on this one simple task.

Default Printer Issue
The wrong printer is set as the default. See the image below for an illustration.
pattlnk_1132009_021-enus32058def.jpg
What to do
Open the Printers or Printer and Faxes folder and locate the correct printer icon. To do this:

    1. -In Windows XP, click Start > Settings > Printer and Faxes (or Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes).
-In Windows Vista, click Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Printers.

    2. Right-click on the printer icon, and click Set as Default Printer. A check mark displayed above the printer icon now identifies it as your default printer.

    3. Try printing again.

Topic 3: Printer is "Offline"
The printer is set to Offline and the printer icon appears washed-out. See the image below for an illustration.
pattlnk_1132009_022-enus32058ofln.jpg
What to do
Open the Printers or Printer and Faxes folder and locate the correct printer icon. To do this:

  1. -In Windows XP, click Start > Settings > Printer and Faxes (or Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes).
-In Windows Vista, click Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Printers.

  2. Right-click on the printer icon, and select Use Printer Online.

  3. Try printing again.

Topic 4: Printer is not Ready
The printer is in an "Intervention Requested" state (e.g. paper jam, paper out) but no Windows print error notification message is displayed.
Explanation
The print job cleared the print queue. This means the print queue icon has disappeared from the notification area ('systray') of the task bar. The printer is holding the job, however, until the the printer is returned to a ready state.
What to do
Check the printer LCD, or operator panel menu, to verify that the printer is in a ready state. If not, return it to the required status.
Topic 5: Printer is Paused
The printer or print queue is paused and the print queue icon remains in the notification area ('systray') of the task bar.
Explanation
This is typically an end user error. Dragging the mouse cursor over the print queue icon in the notification area will reveal (1,2,3) document(s) pending for (User name).
What to do

    1. Double-click on the print queue icon to open the print queue. (This may also appear as a small printer icon in the lower-right notification area of the task bar.)
    2. Click on Printer in the upper left-hand corner of the menu bar.
    3. Is there a check mark next to Pause Printing?

-If yes, click on Pause Printing to turn off this Windows feature.
-If no, confirm that there is a check mark next to Set As Default Printer and make sure Use Printer Offline is not selected.

Topic 10: Windows Print Spooler Issue
A problem with the Windows print spooler is preventing successful printing.
What to try
Stop and start the Windows print spooler. To do this:

  • -In Windows XP, click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, click on Print Spooler, click on Stop the service, and then click on Start the service.

  • -In Windows Vista, click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then click services.msc in the Programs list. Right-click on Print Spooler, and then click Stop. Finally, right-click on Print Spooler again, and then click Start.

Remove the first print job from the print queue. To do this:

  1. Double-click on the print queue icon to open the print queue. (This may also appear as a small printer icon in the lower-right notification area of the task bar.)

  2. Click on the first job listed so that it is highlighted.

  3. Click on Document in the top menu bar.

  4. Click on Cancel.

  5. Click Yes when you see: "Are you sure you want to cancel the selected jobs?"

Topic 11: Other Issues
Other possible causes of a print job not printing include:

  • -USB connection problem if locally connected only.

  • -Firewall issues preventing communication.

  • -Workplace virtual private networks (VPNs) preventing communication. VPN tunneling may be required to ensure successful communication. Enabling this feature may require network administrator approval and assistance.

  • -Document formatting.

  • -Driver settings.

  • -Application-specific issues relating to the application's Printer Setup.

Topic 12: Last Resort
If you have tried all of the above suggestions to no avail, try the following:
  1. Reboot your computer and try printing again.
  2. Turn the printer off and on, and then try to print again.
  3. Install a different printer driver, e.g. PCL, PostScript, HBP, or XPS driver.

Communication error occurred with scanning component. Please advise on how to solve this problem.

First try to scan from the scanners and camera wizard in control panel to check the communication between the computer and the all-in-one. If we are able to scan fine from the control panel, then search for the scanning file hpqscnvw.exe and try to scan from there, if you are able or not able to scan from the scanning file, download the scan diagnostic utility from the HP website and run it and try to scan, if the issue persists reinstall the all-in-one software.
