Is it the bobbin thread that is tangling under the fabric, or is it really the top thread accumulating under the fabric? Usually, it is the top thread creating what is commonly called "bird nesting."

If it's truly the bobbin thread, the bobbin case tension may need to be tightened (search the internet for bobbin tension adjustment instructions), and the upper tension may also need to be tightened to help pull the bobbin thread up.

If it is the upper thread, remove the thread completely from the machine. Keep the presser foot RAISED while threading the upper thread--this releases the tension disk so the thread will seat properly.

Install a brand new needle.

Rethread from the beginning and verify with the manual that it is threaded correctly. Set the upper tension at the midway point between high & low numbers. (This is the factory standard to start from before tweaking adjustments.)

Test. If the upper thread is still coming through too much under the fabric, tighten the upper tension disk. Keep tightening, a little at a time, and retesting. The ideal tension setting is when both the upper thread and bobbin thread meet in the middle of the fabric.

The upper tension is the method to tweak tension whenever changes are made, ie the type of fabric being sewn, etc. Ergo, the tension setting for chiffon will most likely not work on denim because the weight of the fabrics vary greatly. It is important to be able to make upper tension adjustments to achieve the best stitching result for the project. Bobbin tension is very seldom altered except when using special threads that are very light weight or heavy or when the bobbin tension is way out of whack.

How to thread up a UHT J 1947 SEWING MACHINE

Threading a UHT J 1947 sewing machine is a relatively simple process that can be broken down into a few basic steps:
  1. Raise the presser foot lever and thread the machine according to the diagram on the machine.
  2. Wind the bobbin according to the instructions in the manual.
  3. Place the bobbin in the bobbin case.
  4. Draw up the bobbin thread by turning the hand wheel towards you.
  5. Hold the end of the bobbin thread and press the foot control to raise the needle to its highest point.
  6. Thread the needle according to the threading diagram on the machine.
  7. Lower the presser foot, and you are ready to sew.
It is important to consult the user manual of your specific UHT J 1947 sewing machine to get the most accurate instructions, as the threading process may vary depending on the machine's model and design.

WONT SEW THREAD GETS ALL TANGELED UNDER THE BOBBIN CARRIER

Don't say the make of the machine but this may help.
First, check thread tension. Make sure both bobbin thread and top thread are the same. Make sure both needle and thread are suitable for the material being sewn.. Make sure the needle is correctly threaded. Make sure the needle is not bent or blunt. Check that there are no pieces of thread or lint caught underneath the needle plate.Make sure that the thread is not too old and inclined to knot.:-)

Bought machine at a garage sale. It works but no Manuel of instructions. Need to know how to thread it.

If you can't download the manual, try putting the thread on the spool holder with the thread coming off the spool toward the back of the machine. Be sure your fly wheel is turned toward you until the need is in its highest position. With the end of the thread, work your way across the top of the machine to the left, staying toward the back of the machine, threading through any thread guides as you go. There may only be one. Bring the thread toward the front of the machine and through the thread guide at the top front of the machine, then down on the right side of the tension knob and back up to the needle carrier. Then pull the thread down through any thread guides until you get to the needle. Thread the needle and pull the tail of thread to the back of your machine. Load your bobbin into the bobbin case, insert the case into the machine until you hear a click (you may need to rotate the case slightly to get it into the machine.) turn your fly wheel toward you while holding that top thread toward the back of the machine until the bobbin thread comes up. Pull the bobbin thread up and to the back of the machine an you are ready to go! Good luck!

I just got this machine. I opened it, threaded it according to the instructions. When I started to sew it got hung up and wouldnt budge. I rethreaded everything, smoothed out my material and tried...

Something is not right with your threading or your thread. Insert a new needle, totally rethread. Now once you think that you have it threaded right, put your presser foot up, pull on both threads, it should feed smoothly, now lower the presser foot, pull the thread again, it should barely move. This usually seats the thread in the tension discs. Make sure that your thread is not old thread, because it breaks easily and causes grief. Hold your threads when you first start out for a few stitches, if you are sewing on thin material, use a stabilizer. If, you still have problems, take the machine back and get one that has the dvd with it. Good luck

My europro shark was working fine until my 12 year old daughter used it. Now the top thread keeps getting caught on the arm that protudes from the bobbin case. What to do?

Don't tell your daughter what you just told the whole world.

Get out the manual for the machine.

Do the recommended maintenance.

Replace the needle, according to the written instructions.

Make a new bobbin and install it according the the written instructions, into the bobbin case and shuttle.

Chances are this is all that is needed, but go a step farther and re-thread the machine according to the written instructions.
