I assume that you're stressed out after witnessing this problem. However, I recommend that you don't worry much about it.
I can explain it in further detail. But, it would be best to refer to your manual. This isn't a problem. It's merely fixing the settings which will allow you to use this wonderful camera.
Please refer to Page number 126 in the handbook. All the best.
If you have the lens set to the lowest number, you should be seeing a FEE error on the display. The lens needs to be set to the highest number, typically 16 or 22.
The best setting depends on what you're taking a picture of and, more importantly, what YOU want that picture to say to the viewer. The best setting for a portrait most likely won't be the best setting for a landscape, for example. You probably won't want a picture of a grandfather to convey the same impression and mood as a picture of his granddaughter, and you probably want something different for a picture of the two of them together. That's why the camera offers so many different settings. It just takes pictures. You MAKE pictures by deciding what to include and exclude, whether you have a deep or narrow depth of field, and all the other little things. The camera manual tells you what the various controls do. There should be plenty of introductory photography books at your local library that will explain the effects of those controls. I suggest taking one (or more) of those books, your camera manual, and the camera itself, and experimenting to see what happens with changing the various settings. Take a lot of pictures and look at them on your computer. You can always delete these pictures when you're done.
It's very likely the CCD sensor that needs to be replaced. If you need to have it serviced, this place is excellent for the Powershots and not much at all if you need to have one fixed: www.camerasandparts.com Before having it fixed, press the DISP button first and make sure you just didn't turn the display off. If you end up needing service for the Canon, that place above is really great for these cameras.
Won't take a picture?? Why not?? Chip in? battery up? Any error readings? Lens in place? Set on auto? Camera on? Check owner's manual? If you need repair, United Camera is a good place for Nikon repair, they have fixed 2 of my cameras. good prices, no problems.
I think most of these questions about black LCD's and black pictures relate to a stuck shutter. My Lumix LX2 has this. The screen is black and so are the pictures. On looking at the shutter through a magnifying glass I took a shot and I saw that the iris works fine, but the shutter did not open. I am sending the camera for repair at a reasonable rate from Clearer images here in the UK.This is the email: [email protected]. Time will tell won't it?
If there is a problem with the flash itself or the mainboard connection to the flash it will not charge. If the flash won't charge then it won't go off when you take a picture. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the flash with a good used one and see if that fixes it. If not, then you need to replace the mainboard. Good used parts can usually be found online for cheap; that auction website doesn't pay me to type their name, so I don't, sorry. Hope this helps!

Try taking pictures and download them to a computer. Check the colors and evaluate the quality compared to what you have seen in the LCD display. If the pictures are good and the colors seem to appear good on the computer, then some thing is either not adjusted correctly for the LCD or you may have a menu setting which is incorrect. Check all setting in the menus. Test the camera again, and see what the colors look like in the LCD display. If both the LCD display and the pictures on the computer are the same, then some problem exists in the camera, and may need fixing, or sell on a site such as Ebay for parts or repair as is.
