Is this a front loader? If so, there is a panel right below the door. Three screws hold the panel. Remove the screws, and right behind that panel is a filter. have a towel ready, and screw the filter out. it is probably clogged. Remove the debris from the basket, was it out and replace.
If its a top loader, then try running about a galleon of vinager thru it to remove the hard water build up. Good luck
It is not the dishwasher. The problem is hard water. There is a new product out called the dishwasher filtration system. It filters the water before it enters your dishwasher. It works amazing and has a money back guarantee. You will love the way your dishes look after the first load. It is also very affordable (like 70 bucks). Go to www.dishwasherfilter.com to find out more info.
A water softner will not make the dishes any cleaner, it just makes it so they don't have water spots on them. If the dishes are dirty, it is most likely that the nozzles (holes) in arms may be plugged. Also check to make sure you are getting plenty of water to dishwasher. Make sure all water valves are full turned open.
If the control panel does not work all the time, it is very likely you have either a shorted wire, or a fualty main board which is very common in newer machines.
I had a similar problem where slowly specific buttons stop working. Moisture was getting into the control board and slowly killing buttons. I replaced the control board and that worked for another year, until the buttons began dying again.
For now, there are other ways to start the machine, but you just have to let time expire to stop it. It is probably a control board issue.
