Took the machine apart to clean it and the ball came out. not sure where it came from as i cannot figure out its function.it will not drain the water out now and i'm wondering if this is why. any help would be much appreciated.

Get the pennies or dimes out of the accordian style black hose at the bottom of the washer. You will need to lay the washer against something so you can get in from underneath. Take a plyers and squeeze the medal clamp so the hose can slip off. I found 3 dimes that acted like washers. The machine will drain.

GE Prifile dishwashers have a valve called a "Piston" and an "O" -Ring under the screen that become degraded over time. The part is around $10 and it takes about an hour to do the repair. You can do this yourself if you are handy and have some simple tools. You can go to the GE website and get a free owners manual.

take the airgap apart. located on top of sink. clean out and reassemble.

Check inside the filter housing with a flashlite for debris that got around the filter. If it is clean, you have a bad pump and it needs to be replaced.

The obstruction can be external to the unit. Check the drain at EACH connection working backward from the sink connection all the way to the motor pump outlet hole. Do not forget to dis-assemble the Air-Gap (if installed) and to check the inside of the garbage disposal hole also.
If all of these areas are free of obstructions then there is a good possibility that the pump impeller is either very worn / broken blade or there may be damage in the pump housing itself.
I think that if you look at the external drain lines, holes, and connections you notice a big change in the dishwashers performance.
Noting that you have hard water.... I really don't like promoting products.. but when one works and works well I will pass that information along.

Lastly.... if you need to clean up the dishwasher.. on an empty no dishes cycle add 2 cups of white vinegar when you know the cycle has just started filling NOT draining and let it wash. Then do your dishes after that cycle.

This is a basic blowup of your machine. all of the parts that you need to check are inside of the dishwasher. the dishwasher strainer catches any food or material before it gets to the pump system. make sure that it is clean, and as above, make sure there is no food particals in the long wash arms. If your machine is draining into the top of you garbage disposal, make sure it is cleaned by running water through it with it running for about 15 secs.. If this doesn't help, msg me back and I will go over some simple other items with you, before you tear it all apart.
The filter is probably blocked.
It is inside the base of the machine.
Take out the filter and clean it and also clean out the filter well as that can also hold quite a bit of debris.
