MY MAGIC CHEF IWORKS FINE 2 TO 3 WEEKS A TIME ,AFTER 3 WEEKS IT STOPS COOLING - I REMOVE EVERYTHING OUT FRIDGE AND UNPLUG IT FOR A DAY ,A DAY LATER I PLUG BACK AND IT OPERATES FINE FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS AND I...

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
Without your model number here is what most likely has happened:
The automatic defrosting system is not working due to a component failure.

The components of the automatic defrost system are:
1. Defrost control
2. Defrost heater
3. Defrost thermostat.
4. Wiring to inter-connect 1 - 3 above.

What your currently doing is a manual defrost cycle every 3 weeks because ice blocks the air-flow across the evaporator in the freezer compartment so everything starts warming up in the fresh food section first and finally the freezer as the ice block gets larger.

FYI you can unplug it... remove the contents from the freezer...use an external directed into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours to do the same process your doing in 24 hours. Until the automatic defrost system is repaired you should do a manual defrost at least every 4 days.
Most units are on an automatic defrost cycle of 6 - 8 hours (usually) all the way up to 10.35 hours per cycle. Yours just is not working at all.

Side-by-side, 21.3 cubic ft total. The freezer is working very well, but the refrigerator side is not cooling sufficiently. I unplugged it a week ago and wondered if I plugged it back in if it might...

With it being unplugged for a week it will be hard to call. Plug the machine back in and first check to see if the fan in the freezer compartment starts running. IF it does let the the machine stay on. I'm betting it will start working fine for a few days and then you'll start seeig the same problem again. The reason being is that you more than likely have a defrost system issue, which consist of defrost heaters, a bi-metal thermostat, ad a defrost timer sometimes call an adaptive defrost control. The way to know if this is the problem is you'll start noticing a build up of ice on the back freezer wall. The way to check the heaters is to unplug the machine, take an ohm meter and check for continuity on the heaters which are located behind the freezer back panal. Nine times out of ten though for this brand it will be the defrost timer, but change the bi-metal thermostat which is located near the defrost heaters anyway because its a very cheap part and will save you from doing it later.

My samsung side by side was working great untill

You have an automatic defrost problem. The refrigerator is not defrosting
Three important parts. It probably is one of these.
Defrost Timer
Defrost thermostat
defrost heater.
The fan is probably fine, but has nothing to do with Defrost
Check the heater continuity and change the heater defrost thermostat
then replace timer if those don't solve it.

Refrigerator and freezer quit working.

That sounds like it could be the problem. The common causes are a bad defrost heater, defrost timer or a defrost thermostat.

Freezer works great, but refrigeration section stopped working

Check the door seals on fridge and freezer to make sure there are NO leaks.
Try manually adjusting air flap that controls air from freezer to fridge, the flap may be frozen or the actuator that controls the flap may be faulty.

GE GSS25WGMCC, Ice Forming On Freezer Interior Surfaces

i had the same problem and i replaced the defrost heater and it worked fine for about one month but now having the same issue. Most of the time from what I have heard it is the defrost heater (about $60 part). I might have another issue going on with mine like a defrost thermostat. Your defrost heater is right under the panel on the inside of the freezer section. remove white panel on back side of freezer section and remove two screws and two wires and replace it and you should be fine.

Frigidaire side by side model# FRS6LR5EW6

Sounds like a defrost problem or a plugged drain... to get it to work temporary defrost the freezer. Unplug the refrigerator, open the door and get a blow dryer and warm up the freezer. wait until the water stop dripping out or about 12 to 24 hours and then you can plug it back in . it will work for 2 to 3 weeks.

To unplug the drain.defrost the freezer .remove the back cover. Use a pipe cleaner to clear the drain. pour a few cups of hot water down the drain.

The defrost systems is:
HEATER-DEFROST
THERMOSTAT-DEFROST
Adaptive defrost control
Start with the adaptive defrost control board. The fresh food section light switch and light bulb must work. To initiate a defrost cycle, open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds. The compressor and fans should shut off and the defrost heater should come on. Open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds to remove the refrigerator from the defrost mode and back into a cooling mode.
Frigidaire - referance model FSC23F7DSB3
This product comes equipped with an Adaptive Defrost Control (ADC). To activate manual defrost, press and hold the Freezer temperature UP (WARMER) key while pressing the Fresh Food temperature DOWN (COLDER) key 5 times within 6 seconds. A d in the freezer temperature window and F in the refrigerator temperature window will display when the heater is activated. To deactivate manual defrost, press and hold Freezer temperature UP (WARMER) key while pressing the Fresh Food temperature DOWN (COLDER) key 5 times within 6 seconds. d and F will be displayed until the defrost cycle is complete. (approx. 8 minutes)

Heater / Thermostat
You will have to remove the back panel of the freezer to check the heater for and thermostat for continuity. Heater are the lease likely part to go bad... I always change thermostat and timers together.
let me know if this helps or we can chat if you need more help.

My Maytag side by side is coolong on the Refridirator side, but the freezer is working fine. I ahve the seeing on the freezer set 3 and the fridge set to 8

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
