HP Laserjet 1020 Spooler not starting

I am trying to install a Laserjet 1020 on windows XP it tells me that it installs successfully but if i go into printers and faxes there is nothing there and if i click add printer it gives me the error "operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running." I have tried starting the print service but it keeps stopping. I also tried running the cleanspl but that just told me there was no .spl files found. Any advise on how to get rid of the drivers off the machine?

I have tried running updates already and there is no change. I have also tried uninstalling the drivers but is telling me "the program has been unexpectedly shutdown".

Hi there,
Print spooler not running is not the printer error, it happens when the print spooler service starts working in windows, For making it enable you dont have to reinstall the drivers for the printer, as print spooler service is for every printer, even if you put another printer the result will be the same
To Enable Print Spooler Open Control Panel
Go to administrative Tools>Services (For Windows XP Users)
Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools( for windows 7 users)
Open Services Find Print Spooler in the list
Right click the service and make it stop, if its already stop set it to Start and then again give prints
Double click on the service and set "Startup type to AUTOMATIC". You should now be able to get prints from your printer
Now restart your desktop/laptop and check if the service is still working by giving any test print.
Hope it will solve your issue

Hi,

I believe you have installed the driver from the CD (you did not mention the operating system). Hence I recommend to install the UPD (universal Printer Driver) PCL6 for your machine.
Remember to disconnect the computer and connect the printer only when the installation wizard asks you to do so.

To download the driver go to http://www.hp.com/go/upd

This will solve the spooler issue, also follow these instructions
Start>run>services.msc>print spooler>right click, stop and then start again

Cannot print on shared printer

I had the same problem with HP 1018 printer, when I had two computers connected to a domain and had Windows XP SP3 on them and when I shared the printer on one of them - I could only print from the network if the user belonged to the Local Administrators group on the host/server computer. Once the network user is removed from Administrators - the print jobs are stuck in print queue. I used the "HP LaserJet Host Based Print Driver Package" that is on HP web site for HP laserjet 1018 printer.
Then I tried to use a different driver for that printer and was successful with driver for HP LaserJet 1020. After forcing that printer to use the 1020 drivers, the regular users were able to print to that printer.

1020 Spooler SubSytem

ok, so for this, always had an issue with this one,
so, what i did is started the spooler, the way to do this is you have to go into control panel>>>admin. tools>>> services>>>printer spooler>>> and then you have a blue icon on your left where you have to click on the button that says start the spooler, now i recommend you minimize this window,

next step is that you add the printer through the add a printer wizard in most cases the printer should already have the basic driver installed into the computer. and way to add it to to start the add a wizard, click on add a port make sure the box where it reads plug in play is unchecked, so the only icon you have checked is the local port, next you choose the port that is usb001 from here you choose hp>>> then laserjet 1020, let the printer driver install and finally your done.
