Fuser jam, maybe the exit switch ?
If you turn the unit off and back on does it come up ready to copy or ready to scan you job

SOURCE: I have a Xerox, Workcentre

On this model, the heat roll has a temperature sensor. If the heat roll is worn and coated with toner, this will damage the sensor. Most common problem is this sensor goes out when a heat roll is badly worn. Circuit boards on this model are pretty reliable.
This sounds like a fuser rebuild.
