My Kenmore propane fueled gas oven gives off a powerful strong smell every time it is started. The burners on top do not. Is there any way I can correct this?
The smell is emitted every time we start the oven. It dissipates as the heat come up. Additionally the oven seems to produce quite a bit of soot.
Re: My Kenmore propane fueled gas oven gives off a...
This is because the gas is on full before the oven lights
IT is an explosive situation and should be quickly corrected by an accredited gas fitter
the soot indicates an incorrect burn ratio and that will be the major part of the problem

Given that its gas, I would advise you get a competent person to check it out. Propane gas and sparks don't mix. There are things in the owners manual you may feel confident enough to check, if not, leave it to a trained person.
Can you post more details like: Does the oven ignitor come on (glow orange)? Can you hear the oven gas valve click open and/or smell gas? Do all the stovetop burners work fine? Have you checked your propane tank to be sure you are not out of gas?
If you are getting soot residue, it could be a number of things, First, is this a natural gas or propane oven? If you bought an oven to be used for propane, it may need to be converted from natural gas to propane or it will soot everything up. 2nd, have you recently spilled food/liquid onto the oven burner? If the burner holes are partially plugged, the remaining holes will burn large yellow flames and soot up the oven. Check the burner flames, they should be mostly blue with little to no yellow tips. Also make sure the oven burner flames are not too big. They should never exceed the width of the flame spreader pan directly above the burner, in fact they should be less than half the width. You could also have other issues like improper air shutter adjustment to the oven burner or very low regulator pressure, but most likely it has just been spilled on recently.
You need a Gas tech/plumber there urgently!!!! If the gas jets in your oven had not been changed to accomodate LP gas then the orifice on your existing jets are still to large in diameter. In other words your using Natural Gas jets ( lower pressure jets) for Lp which has a much higher pressure than Nat. gas, this can be extremely dangerous, & could cause major problems. Again I strongly suggest you contact a Gas tech/Plumber & do not use your oven until it has beeen checked by a professional.Good luck
Hello. Chances are that something on the stove boiled over or got poured into that burner. take it off, soak it overnight in water with dishsoap added, then rinse it and let it dry before reinstalling it. Repeat the soaking in soapy water if necessary until the flaring, sputtering and black soot is gone. regards, Joe
By this description you gave it sounds as your oven burner has a flash back ,when it is like that does your flame look very yellow and gives off a Funny Smell ( which i Will think it is CARBON MONOXIDE . Remove the Oven burner make sure you watch for any wires attached to the burner (yes even in a Gas Stove) that would be part of your safety device . Make sure there is NO Rubbish in your Burner and your Burner
Well . Clean it out Make sure your Injector is Clear Carefully replace your Burner Making sure it fits over the Injector ,Replace any wirer if you removed any and relight
