Sorry but you may need some repairman to look at the machine. There could be a problem with the transport, winding around head, pinch rollers dirty, belts gone bad and other faults-electronic components gone bad.Take an estimate from the repairman and see if worth to repair the machine.
Did you try another tape? How old is it ?
Hope this helps

TV powers off if you put a tape in that isn't rewound? As long as the tape isn't at the end, everything works fine, but if it's at the end, it won't let you rewind it. It just turns off. Help?!

Sounds like a problem with the end sensor. If you lift up the flap of a VHS tape you will see just above the catch of the flap a hole in both sides of the tape housing. If you turn the tape upside down, you will see a large hole inside in the centre between the two reel hubs. A infra-red LED in the machine mechanism fits into the this hole and sends a light (invisible to the ***** eye) out to the holes in the sides of the cassette when the tape is inside the machine. But when the black tape is in the way the light is blocked, but as soon as the clear leader tape appears the light passes out to an IR Detector, which sends out a signal to the electronics that the tape has run out and it will stop the mechanism. But in your case the IR Detector for the end has stop working. So when the tape has stopped and can't move the light detector has sent no signal out to say stop. So the electronics shuts the whole system down to prevent damage.
You should replace the IR Detector on the left side (tape in front panel). That should correct the problem. It shouldn't be to expensive.

Went i put a tapes my vhs it just eating the tape up and it cuts off

You need to purchase a VHS head cleaner or clean the heads and pinch rollers by hand. remove cover and lid to drive system. you will see all the tape guides, rollers and heads. use Q-tips and denatured alcohol and clean every thing the tape touches. swap q-tips as they get dirty.

Shuts off when trying to play or record

This could be due to the VHS tape sticking on the tape reel, that triggers the overload and the shutdown. Try fast forwarding if possible.

Vcr shuts off when i put in the tape

This means the system detected a fault and shut down to protect the tape. Have you tried another tape? Probably needs servicing - hard or cracked rubber belts or idler tyre, or a seized arm due to lubrication drying up or becoming sticky.

Vhs player eating tape

Hunnn....Eats the tapes, with salt & paper?..just a joke!
The tape runs on a guide ( sort of a tiny ledge )when it is fully engaged. The tape cartgage is loaded ' sucked ' in with gears that drop the cartage on top of other switches to give direction, so that "fingers" pull the tape towards the reading\recording heads. When the tape IS aligned properly, BUT is locked in the proper position the tape will NOT touch the upper or lower "ledge" that keeps it accross the heads. When the tape is NOT aligned the upper or lower tape WILL touch causeing damage. OPEN THE CARTGAGE ,Look to see if the upper & lower of the tape is damaged. Now when you say "eats the vhs tape" Does the tape comes out WRINKLE, CRINKLED,CRAMPED UP??? Then that could be ANY wheel with a black rubber rim. going bad. replace if you can. but they are VERY HARD TO FIND if u don't know what u are doing.

Toshiba w528 vcr tape eating

Tape "eating" is usually caused by a no take-up condition, that is, the take-up spindle isn't being driven, and thus a certain amount of tape spools out inside the mechanism until the logic circuit senses an error condition and places the machine in an off or stop mode. Cleaning the head shouldn't cause this, assuming you knew what you were doing, and nothing was broken or bent in the process. Look down in between the spindles, and you will see an idler wheel which pivots between the spindles, depending if the mode is Rewind, Fast forward or play. This idler mechanism should pivot freely. If the grease is dried or sticky, or the idler is otherwise broken- gear teeth missing, etc. such must be corrected. If the idler needs replacement, one might be available from the manufacturer, or a parts supplier such as MCM Electronics.
