I am going to make an assumption that you need frequencies for your local area. Go tho the radio reference site and choose your local county from the map. It will list all police and fire frequencies for your area. Below is their address.

The address in my prior post will take you to the Los Angeles California county list. This address will take you to the map of the United States.

Can you listen to a police frequency if it's trunked with this scanner? Uniden BC72xlt

You can listen to trunked police bands UNLESS: 1 they went Digital and your scanner is Analog. 2. They use an encrypted control frequency. 3. It is not against the law in your area. 4. you have a Trunked scanner. Following trunked frequencies requires a trunked scanner which is very different from regular everyday scanners. If the photo of your scanner is accurate then it appears you have Digital capability so that won't be a problem. You can go to Radio shack and purchase a book on Public Safety frequencies and Control Frequencies which will give you the proper frequency range but they will tell you nothing about Encryption on any Frequency. If you can not find a Control Frequency then you will not be able to track the hoping that is used in a trunked system. By the way, a Regular scanner runs about $50 where as a Trunked Scanner runs $150 to $200.

I cannot figure out how to program my scanner to the fire frequency.

To program any known frequency into your BC72XLT, power the scanner ON, and then:

1. Press Hold. Then enter the channel number where you want to store a frequency, then press Func and Pgm. The channel number appears.
2. Use the number keys and to enter the frequency (including the decimal point) you want to store.
3. Press E to store the frequency into the channel.

Notes:
• If you entered an invalid frequency in Step 2, Error appears and the scanner beeps three times. Enter a valid frequency.
• The scanner automatically rounds the entered number to the nearest valid frequency. For example, if you enter 151.473 (MHz), your scanner accepts it as 151.475.
• When you enter a frequency into a channel, the scanner automatically turns on the delay function and DLY appears. When delay is turned on, the scanner automatically pauses scanning 2 seconds after the end of a transmission before scanning proceeds to the next channel. To turn the function off or on, press Func + Dly.
• If you enter a frequency that has already been entered elsewhere, the scanner sounds an error tone and displays the channel that was duplicated. If you entered the frequency by mistake, press then enter the correct frequency. To enter the frequency anyway, press E to
accept.

4. To program the next channel in sequence, press E then repeat Steps 2 and 3.

How do i use an inherited uniden scanner. dad didn't leave instructions.... how do i set it up? which frequency do i use? many thanks

A scanner, if used properly, can monitor frequencies as it progresses through them. If you want your scanner to monitor only certain frequencies of your choice, you can set those frequencies as the PRIORITY channels. Example: push PROGRAM then punch in frequency 152.6255 then set the mode (if nessessary) at VHF (very High Frequency) UHF (Ultra High Frequency) or FM (Frequency Modulator) or AM (Amplitude Modulator) etc. You can program as many priority channels as the scanner allows.

Hope this helps!
