Question about Samson C01U - USB Studio Condenser Microphone Consumer Microphone
So I've been using the same setup for months: My Samson c01u mic plugged into one of the USB ports of my Dell laptop, running Windows 10, and recording in Audacity. The recording volume is set at 52. Usually, this records just fine, with very little background noise and a very clear recording. However, when I plugged in my mic today and started recording, it was so quiet that it was nothing more than a single line in Audacity, and I could hardly hear my voice at all, let alone what I was saying. Have tried several ways to fix it, none have worked. I tried a few different things to fix it, including changing the volume (anything under 80 is far too quiet, and anything 80 and up picks up far too much background noise and is way too loud), and making sure the default format matched Audacity's (it did). My mic still isn't working properly, and I have no idea how to fix it.
Try a different mic to see if problem follows. If yes then it is a setting. If not then the mic is bad and needs to be sent to mfg or get a new one.

Welcome to the world of STUDIO microphones. Super quality BUT you must have a studio to use them. You can't have any local speaker playing into them. You often use headphones lest your monitor speakers will feedback. At the high frequency capability of these mics, you can fry your amps with oscillations above what you can hear!

Are you sure you're adjusting the gain under the Recording Properties and not the Microphone slider under Playback Properties?
