Question about Samsung HP-R4252 42 in. Plasma HDTV
Screen had black horz. Lines then went all black. Sound still works.
SOURCE: Screen went black, no picture
This is more than likely your (upper Y buffer board) that has failed, turn your Tv off then remove the back and stand, once the back is off then look to your far left hand side you will see 1 x big board which is your Y SUSTAIN and further left of that you will see 2 x boards ( long rectangular shaped ) connected to that and to the screen via ribbon cables.
You need to replace the one at the top left.
They have a number on the board that you should right down then Google or Ebay it for a replacement.
99% of the time this will cure the problem.
If this helps please comment and vote.

Problems with these TVs not turning on are usually capacitor related. Take the back off then look on the power supply where the power chord goes look at the fuse next to the plug. See if it's physically dark if so, the fuse is most likely blown and you should just look up the board number on E-bay for a new power-supply for a more costly, but easier fix than a repair shop. While the back is off, look for capacitors that are puffed and see if they need to be replaced. There are usually 2 caps by a heat sink that look bulged.

This is the inverter board if this is the case. Try swapping one at a time because usually only one is bad.

SOURCE: Samsung LCD black tv screen
All Plasma and LCD TV have boards that control vertical and horizontal output to their respective areas. They are connected to the screen by ribbon cables. If one of these boards fails all together, has a failed chip, a bad connection, or a bad ground somewhere it will result in a black line in the area of that board. A bad ribbon cable connection on the bottom will result in a vertical black bar though the screen. Many times resetting the connection will fix it, if the ribbon cable has been nicked there could be a severed connection. They an sometimes be fixed, but it is a pain. An yes I have done it, but the bar is gone. The same will happen if the chip that outputs to that area opens. The connectors are the first place to look paying close attention to the cable, they are extremely delicate so great care must be taken....

Sounds like power supply regulator board fault. Check all the electrolytic capacitors for any leaked or bulged one. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Viewing it in "Mosaic" or "Magazine" will make surf easy. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. Do asearch by type in the brand name of your device at its search box.
It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis.
