SOURCE: Hotpoint Mistral Frost Free Fridge freezer - fridge not getting cold

We have just had to call out an engineer to get our 1 1/2 year old Hotpoint Graphite Frost Free Fridge Freezer repaired. The fridge had almost entitely stopped cooling even when on high. I was amazed at how easily the problem was sorted. The engineer removed all the basktes from the freezer to access the screws on the inside backpanel of the freezer. Once this panel was removed it was clear that the so called Frost Free doesn't really mean what it says. The ice need to be melted with a bit of simple care. It is obvious that with a bit of care it is easliy a diy job BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND READ THE NEXT PART BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO REMOVE THE ICE> The ice forms around variouys pipes etc and he usecd a screwdriver to help release the ice quicker than waiting for it to defrost and he also used a simple hairdryer to help speed up the process. He had a ntowel and a basin to take care of the water. Next time I would have no problem doing this myself but I would need to leave it a little while to defrost and NOT USE A SCREWDRIVER as I am sure somehow I would puncture a pipe or the wall of the freezer itself and I am quite used to doing the odd bit of DIY. On a difficulkty scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being difficult I would rate the job as about a 3. Hope this helps anyone who reads this about £70.

SOURCE: freezer cold but not fridge

too much ice bulid up will stop enough cold air being blown into the fridge.Try turning it off letting all ice melt then turn it back on again and set thermostat at a lower temp. There may be ice you can't see.

Freezer not working/but fan is running

The freezer side may be icing up. Soon enough the fridge side may have problems, too. Love those Sub-Zeros, but if the defrost timer fails, it will ice up. Defrost timer is up top. A generic one will do.

My fridge/freezer door open light is flashing, not cooling either. Help please.

Hello
Your Refrigerator not cooling is a fridge repair job that you can do without the help of a professional. Often the fridge has a frost-free failure, or the compressor is faulty but there are many other reasons for a fridge not cooling properly.
Step 1 - Find the Problem

Your first job is to locate the source of the problem. Consider each of the following:

* Gaskets - Make sure the gaskets/seals are not torn and are sealing properly.
* Evaporator fan - Make sure it is working. If it is now working you may have a problem with the fan motor. Check for power to the motor and also examine the fan switches around the door (not all fridges have these switches).
* Air damper - Sometimes the air damper will not open up to allow the cold air from the freezer part to blow into the fridge section.
* Condenser coils - Check to see that the condenser coils don't have a dust build-up and that the condenser motor is working.
* Compressor - Make sure your compressor is working with on and off clicking noises.

Step 2 - Frost-Free Failure

This is the most common cooling problem in fridges. Expose the evaporator coils by accessing the panel in the freezer section. The coils in the freezer section can sometimes get clogged up with frost. This can stop the evaporator fan motor from blowing cold air around, or cause the fan to hit it and stop, or become noisy. The defrost timer can be a bit tricky to find but it is usually located behind the back bottom corners of the fridge, although they can sometimes be found in the ceiling of the fresh food section, or behind the cold control cover.
Step 3 - Find the Timer

When you find the timer, turn the wheel-like screw slowly with a screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. The refrigerator is now defrosting. If you find that the fridge starts now, you will need to replace the defrost thermostat and the defrost timer.
Step 4 - Volt Test

If the heaters do not come on, use a volt meter to ohm test the defrost heater or volt test for 120 volts to the heater. You can bypass the defrost thermostat if you haven't got power to the defrost heater to check if the defrost heater will come on. To bypass the thermostat, join the two wires together. Replace the defrost thermostat and the defrost timer if the heater comes on now.

If there is a ticking or squealing noise in the defrost timer, or it seems hot to touch, replace it.

Many fridges have and inline fuse on both sides of the defrost heater. You will need to replace the whole heater if one of those fuses blows. Check these fuses with a volt meter if the defrost heater doesn't work.

A quick check if you have a cooling problem is to inspect the evaporator coils. If there is a build up of white snow on the coils, this indicates a frost free problem; if there is balled ice on part of the coils with the rest bare, this indicates a system problem, like a problem with the pumping compressor.
Hope this help in solving the problem, Take care....

Fridge part now working

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

What your describing is a result of either an automatic defrosting problem or an Air Damper problem.

Here is what you can do to determine if it is a defrost issue or an Air Damper issue.

1. Unplug the unit
2. Empty the freezer section ONLY contents
3. Place a fan blowing into the freezer section for a little over 2 hours. NOTE: This will make a water mess so be prepared.
4. After the manual defrosting session with the fan re-load the freezer contents and plug the unit back in.
5. Check food section temps in about 4 hours.
NORMAL temps you have an automatic defrost problem
WARM temps you have an Air Damper Problem.

Either of the above will require further troubleshooting or service. At least you will know where to start or... what to tell a service person.

Thanks for using FixYa.

My fridge freezer made by samsung is on the blink

These fridges have an evaporator fan motor on both sides - the freezer and fridge side. The freezer can maintain it's temperature because that fan is working fine. I had the same problem, and replaced the evaporator fan motor on fridge side, and it solved the problem. Also, if your fan motor is not working well, or stops working, the evaporator is prone to ice build up, and will prevent proper cooling. You may want to open up panel on fridge side and see if that's the case. Taking a blow dryer to the evaporator and surrounding area (while fridge is off), or letting it sit for a few hours might solve the problem. Ultimately though, it appears as if these fan motors are prone to failure, and need to be replaced.

Ariston Fridge not cooling - Frozen Coils

Try to check the noisy fan, slow rotation of fan can cause the icing evaporator. Unplug the unit and rotate the fan manually by your finger check if the fan is not misalign or not touching the fan frame. Or check if fan motor bearing is not worn out. Under charge of gas is also one of icing cause.
