My steam iron has started to smell badly - almost like a dead rat rotting away. The smell lingers in the room for hours after ironing. I change the filters regularly. What is causing the bad smell?
Do you use distilled water in your iron. The filters may have bacteria on them, especially if the filter does not get very hot. Bacteria thrives in dark, wet environments. The bacteria has moved away from the filter into the iron, so changing filters would not help much for very long. I would buy a new iron that does not use filters and only use distilled water in it. Distilled water stops mineral deposits from forming inside the iron.
Testimonial: "Thank you for the info. I used tap water. Is there anyway I can "clean" up the bacteria? The iron is working fine so I am reluctant to dump it."
