Usually, it takes longer to find the satellite signa if you are indoors, under structures and/or don't have a clear "line of sight" to the satellites in the sky, assuming you're in a (geographical) area where there's usable satellites .... e.g. not in the middle of the Ocean.
If you are not experiencing these conditions, and it still take a long time, it will help if you download and install the latest QuickGPSFix update from the TomTom website, using HOME (software).
Being in the middle of the ocean would be an excellent place to get GPS signal. Note the GPS satellites are in earth orbit and therefore not only above land.
You need more or less free view of the sky and not just straight up. So being in between skyscrapers will seriously hamper receiving a decent signal.
Also covering the unit with any metal will cause bad reception.

Use the menu entry GPS status to check if your tomtom receives signal from any satellite. You need 5 or more satellites before navigation can work.
If even in the open field you receive nothing, the GPS receiver might be broken.
