My tomtom Rider GPS was working fine earlier today on it's car mount while charging from car accessory outlet (cigarette lighter). After I turned it off and later tried to turn it on, still plugged in via accy outlet, nothing would happen when pushing start-up button. Any advice? Thanks!
My Rider 1 is showing the same sympton. Was working fine now I can't get past the initial "Tomtom" screen.
Does it power up when connected to the mains charger?- No, need to prod reset and then turn on manually.
Does it switch on when connected to the bike cradle? - No, only sign of life if by manually turning on but only get as far as the Tomtom screen, not the main menu.

No, then tom tom cannot recharge when the car is not on. You need to turn on the car before your tom tom can charge. The battery gets to charge the tom tom when in use. Once the car is turned off the gps will not charge. You can try out a practical by turning off your car and plugging the gps to see if it will work. Or the cigarette lighter, does it work when the car is turned off. Since the cigarette lighter does not turn on when the car is off, then it means it gps cannot charge once the car is turned off.
Hope this information helped you!
The plugs which are used with car lighters are often very poor; compare the firmness of the seating of the lighter with your accessory plug.
The latter are often too loose to make decent contact.
Also, that plug is equipped with a fuse; unscrew the plug body and check the fuse.
I also recall someone having a failed plug on the Tomtom itself; it may be a weak point.
If your TomTom GO/ONE/RIDER is frozen, won’t turn on or does not
behave as it should, it can be fixed by resetting or restarting your
TomTom device. A reset will not delete any data from your device, with the exception of SMS messages on TomTom GO500/700.

If it is plugged into the car, you use the DC charger. You can charge it using the usb port on your computer as well. In the accessories section of tomtom.com you will find an ac adaptor as well that can be purchased to charge it to an electrical outlet.
Hello LUCKYPURPLE, The problem could be either with the charger, the battery inside of the GPS, or could be a more serious hardware failure. You don't mention what method you are using to charge the GPS. Most GPS units can be charged three different ways: connection to the cigarette lighter / accessory jack in your automobile, connection to your computer via a USB cable, or from an electrical outlet using an AC adapter. To determine if the charger is at fault, try charging the unit using a different method. For example, if the GPS turns on after charging in your vehicle but not after connection to your computer, the problem likely lies with the USB cable or port. If the unit does not turn on regardless of what method you use to charge it, then you likely either need to replace the internal battery or have the unit serviced by a knowledgeable technician.
Verify that the car cigarette lighter outlet is working. Do you have something that you could plug into the lighter like a light?
With the car running plug the Garmin into the cigarette lighter outlet. Does it come on without pushing the ON button? If the answer is no then there is either a problem with the cable or the cigarette lighter outlet. It should come on by itself if the lighter is working. Also are you using Garmin cables and DC adapter?
do you plug it into the cigarette lighter or is it installed (wired) behind the cigarette lighter.
If so and you happen to plug something into the lighter you run the risk of shorting out our friend TomTom (I did it twice)
