With your Nelco, be sure that you install the needle properly. Frequently, Nelco machines take the needle with the flat side facing toward the throat of the machine--not toward the read like most other machines. The upper thread will thread through the needle's eye from the left toward the right. They also are a left needle position machine--meaning, the standard position of the needle when sewing straight stitch is at the left side of the presser foot, not center like most other machines.

First Thread breaks on nelco 928 why?

Remove all the threads.
Replace the needle.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Verify each thread is in the correct thread path.
ALWAYS THREAD each in the order specified or you will continue to have problems--for a lot of machines, the order is Upper Looper, Lower Looper, then needles.
Check the tension on that particular thread--too tight, it will break.

Breaking thread after about an inch usually indicates it is mis-threaded--a guide has been skipped or threaded out of order or the thread may be wrapped around something.

I need help putting the bobbin threader back onto a Nelco JA38 sewing machine and the springs are giving me fits. Any help?

Not sure if you are having problems with the bobbin winder or threading the bobbin. This may help:

Nelco JA 38 Sewing Machine Threading Diagram

To avoid awful thread nests under the fabric, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread.

Interestingly, the bobbin threading instructions (above) show the bobbin loading into the bobbin case so it turns COUNTER-clockwise. This is the opposite of instructions for most machines. You can probably try both, the clockwise or Counter-clockwise,and see if one works better than the other.

Be sure to use fresh, good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil on your machine. Open it up, while gently wiggling the handwheel, drop a couple drops of oil every place that metal rubs against metal. Avoid plastic or rubber parts! You may even find little round holes throughout that are oil ports. Be sure to get the area around the needlebar, presser foot lifter, feed dogs, the bobbin area, and all the dial and selector mechanisms.

You can find manuals for your machine online (not free!).

Do you have experience with a Nelco Sierra 234F Serger? How is the quality of stitching, how easy is it to use and problem free is this machine? Are you still able to get parts for the machine?

As far as I am aware, Nelco hasn't been made for quite a few years--probably since sometime in the 1970's is my guess. I have an old Nelco sewing machine that is a tank of a machine and sews nearly anything I throw at it. But for finer work, I prefer my Bernina--probably because it has more stitch selections, sews a straighter stitch, and I know it better.

If you aren't able to have the machine demonstrated to you and you can test it to your satisfaction, I'd be reluctant (Actually, that goes for any used machine, not just Nelco!) The following may be helpful:

Hello I have a nelco sewing machine but I have no clue how to sew with it I am a mixed media artist and now I want to incorporate sewing in my art please help me thank you

Before we can help, we need to know the model.

Perhaps this will be helpful:

FWIW, I have an old Nelco J-28 that was passed on to me by someone who started quilting with it and advanced on to a career making wonderful creatively designed scenic quilts. It is a basic machine with straight stitch and a few zig-zag stitches. It's a tough metal mechanical machine and has been used to repair horse equipment (fly masks, etc.) and upholstery. The only thing that is perplexing to me is that it is a left needle position machine, ie the bobbin loads on the left side, the needle faces the left side, and the needle home position is on the left side and swings from the left to the right. All my other machines are center needle position so it takes some adjustment whenever switching to the Nelco--but that is a personal thing and in no way reflects on the machine and its usability. The good thing--since it is a mechanical machine, it can be maintained with frequent oiling using fresh good quality sewing machine oil and regular cleaning.

The best advice ever provided--Always Raise the presser foot when threading the upper thread and make sure the machine is threaded correctly.

I have a Nelco model 217. No manual. Need to know how to thread.

This may be helpful even though not your model. Most machines of the same brand and similar models thread the same:
