I used to get that error all the time with a earlier Fuji FinePix with the slide-over lens cover. If the cover wasn't pushed back completely, the lens would extend only so far and then give an error. Make sure that there's nothing (dirt, hair) on any of the lens surfaces and make sure the lens is fully extending when you do turn the zoom on. Don't let anything touch or bump the zoom while it's moving, either.
Not sure if this will help, since you have a different model. This is what worked for me, though.

My daughter has a Finepix A400 with exactly same problem. Can it be repaired , if so howmuch?
My Fugi FinePix F470 also just out of the blue started showing zoom error and I couldn't get the lense to close. After applying slight pressure to the telephoto scope it did shut and worked for awhile and then the same problem. I was able to get it to turn on again, so I kept turning it on and off to see if it was okay and as I did I could hear an abnormal click each time, like a piece of something had gotten in the lense/scope compartment somehow. Well now it will only turn on and go to a white screen and I have to remove the battery to get it to turn off and the lense/ scope will not close. Is this something repairable? If so please let me know.
