I have a new console case that I am fitting as the hinges on my ds are broken. I have fitted the casing but am unable to get the old metal rods from the old ds case, into the new housing. Any tips as there weren't any instructions with it? Thanks s.swann

you need a new case and top LCD as the cable running through the hinge is fragile and has obviously been broken. Ebay should provide you with spares required and youtube for video's on how to do the job
Yes its fixable but it depends on what has broken. There are two possibilities the small barrel hinge has broken, this is just a case of fitting a new one by opening the case, unscrew the light and gently pulling the top of the case away till you can change the barrel hinge. The other one is the case has broken and is not holding the barrel hinge, can bodge it with some glue sometimes but most often you need a new case.
There out it is nothing like a broken hinge only repair solution, the only way to get it repaired is to buy a new replacement shell and replace the broken parts or the whole shell, but some cheap shells wont last and will broke again so read reviews. And if you are not too skilled be careful when replacing or you can get your DS more damaged.
The best is to find a good case broken DS, like water damage etc. to get only the original plastic parts. I should love to have to buy only the broken parts needed but you have to buy the whole thing.
Hmm, when you removed the top screen's flex cable, were you very gentle indeed? It could have been torn when pushing it through the metal barrel in the hinge and working it into place through the slot in the case. Otherwise it may just not be pushed fully home into its connector socket.
The only way you can repair this properly is to replace the casing with a new one... the hinge is a common problem and over 90% of my customers on the DS and DS Lite need a new case due to broken hinges. Once the plastic bit has broken then it will only get worse. The small bit that you say fell out was the actual hinge itself (a small black part with a silver end that twists and locks your console into place when open). Hope that helps!
