As soon as I turn it on, why does the water run through it?

Sounds like your drain needs a strap. Does all the water drain out as soon as the unit turns off?

Possible thermostat problem

1) Thermostat may be bad, or out of calibration. Set temperature higher, and/or troubleshoot by type of gas control.

2) Dip tube broken

3) Water leak running hot water out of tank.
Turn off all taps and put ear against pipe listening for water leak.

the rubber components of the fuel system from the tank, primer bulb hoses , fuel pump all deteriorate internally and the small rubber failings get to the carby and block all of the run circuits
experience says take it to a mercury service center and have the carby/s professionally overhauled as doing ti at home generally misses the important bits
never use e-mix fuels as the ethanol attracts water and the combination rots metal bits and hoses

That shows a leaking water seal. Water would run into the motor bearings which then rust and make noise. You probably need the motor / pump kit.

This is the inlet selonoid is going bad it is behind where the water connection hoses connect to the machine.

sounds like you have lost your sump
take off the back of the machine
watch the bottom of the tub and turn on the water
you will get a much beeter idea of where its comming from

there is a hose inside the fill tank that should connect to a water port if the hose came off this could be your problem.....

does it do it if you wash in cold also?could be the fill valve is bad. Try this set the washer for cold, cold and see if that happens

The hot and cold pipes run in the wall next to one another. So the water turns cold again as soon as the water starts flowing
