Should I add my meat and vegetables at the same time when making a pot roast.

Hello, Queen -

You can. Most recipes I have found for pot roast made in a slow cooker state to add the vegetables right after adding the meat.

These are links to such recipes I have found:

https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/slow-cooker-pot-roast

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/16346/maries-easy-slow-cooker-pot-roast/

https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/slow-cooker-pot-roast-3361787

By the way, all 3 recipes state one should brown the meat first in a skillet on top of the stove.

Best wishes.

Crock Pots will save you hundreds of dollars per year!

I use my crock pot at least 3 times per week and you just do not understand what you are missing! cheap meat, tough meats, or meat that you just do not know what to do with...the crock pot! Take a cheap whole chicken and cut it up, rump roast or any cheap cut of beef, add 2 large cans of tomatos, large onion thickly sliced, 1tsp of thyme, 1 tsp salt, pepper to taste, 1 cup chopped celery. Put it on high as soon as you wake up, go to work. Let cook on high alone no stirring for at leat 10 hours. Get rid of any fat pieces and serve with any side dishes. The next day, chop the meat that is left, put back in the crockpot with leftover sauce and cook for 4 hours. It will be thicker. Serve over rice! Two great meals, no work and so CHEAP!

I have never had a slow cooker in my life and found this one in a garage sale without the manual. How does it work?

Yes you can use any cheaper cuts of meat or chicken and yes less liquid is used in slow cookers. add hard veges n use green veges for end of cooking time. cook for 6 or 8 hrs on low. Yeilds ecellent results. Find slow cooker books for great meals n desserts. I use mine every week.

I have inherited a west bend slow cooker model 84624 and dont have a manuel for it. I am concerned with the 300 watt is this normal? Or is that very low? I dont know how long to cook in this or amounts...

  • 1 Use setting 1 (warm #1) only to warm rolls and muffins. At 140 degrees Fahrenheit, this setting should not be used for cooking.
  • 2 Use setting 2 (warm #2) to keep cooked foods warm until they're ready to be served.
  • 3 Use settings 3, 4 and 5 (low, medium high) for cooking. The setting you choose determines the length of time the food will cook. A typical meal with meat and vegetables needs 7 to 10 hours to cook at the low or #3 setting, 4 to 6 hours at the medium or #4 setting, and 2 to 3 hours at the high or #5 setting.

  • All West Bend slow cooker models eventually simmer at the boiling point, or 212 degrees. The setting simply determines how quickly the cooker will reach that temperature.

300 watt is not a huge consumption of electricity, depending of course on, how often, how long and how high temperature.

No. It will not brown the meat. Just quick brown your meat and then put in the crock to cook. You will have seriously tender meat and it will be brown.

Like ou, we got one as well and they are great.
If it's burning or overcooking on Low, it may be the heat control is malfunctioning. My wife made several suggestions...

    1. Take it back to where you bought it and exchange it for another.
    2. Call Rival Customer Service and ask them about it 1-800-557-4825
    3. Put a layer of vegetables (carrots, celery, potatoes, etc) on the bottom and meat on top of it, with fluid to keep it moist. Cook on low for shorter periods of time.
